Anti-virus plugin question

Anti-virus plugin question, what is an rar file?

I have tried the links for the NOD32 plugin, but it is a .rar file, which is an unknown file type... Where are the docs for installation of this .rar file? What other anti-virus programs have plug-ins? The Shield? Thanks for answering...
