Assigning a hot key

Is it possible to assign the Shortcut Key 'C' to reply to current message (it's what my old email program used and I can't get out of the habit).

Sure.
View -> Toolbars -> Customise -> Shortcuts tab
Navigate to:
Main Form/Main Menu/Message/Reply
and double click on the shortcuit column (it's saying Ctrl+F5, so it's easy to target)
This will give you a pop-up that says 'Shortcut Editor' with a couple of fields one of them saying 'none' Press C and you'll see that that replaces the 'none', press 'Add', and the rest should come naturally.

Many Thanks

Actually it's doesn't work, as although C does indeed bring up the window to reply to the message, if I type the letter C as part of a word in the reply it tries to open a second copy of the editor.

Didn't test that.
Delete that shortcut (if you haven't done that already)
Create a new shortcut (same procedure), but now at:
Main Form/Message List Pop-Up Menu/Reply
It's greyed out, but you can add a shortcut just fine and it'll work too. It will only work with focus on the message list, so you won't be bothered by disruptive behaviour while typing your actual reply.
