folder configuration, customizing folders

i have just recently downloaded the bat.  i spent 3 days completely customizing every aspect of it.  i have 2 computers and am trying to set the bat up basically the same on both.  i have an aol email address.  i have no problems getting or sending my mail and feel like i understand most all of the settings on this program.  what i can not figure out is how to completely customize my folder tree.  i have trouble making folders sub-folders and creating new folders.  i do not use filters.  i want to be able to drag and drop messages out of my inbox; however, everytime i turn my computer on it seems they are not where i put them.  if i refresh the list it gets its info from aol and i have to start all over.  is there a way to direct the bat to take my commands on my folder configuration instead of getting them from aol.  i dont want to have to constantly change folders on aol in order to get the bat the way i want it.  please help. thanks

Making folders and sub-folders is simply a matter of placing your mouse in the folder/account tree.  Then right clicking to and add a folder to an account or right click and add a common folder to the account tree.  

To move the folder exactly where you want::

1) highlight the folder

2) hold down CTRL & SHIFT and use the LEFT or RIGHT or UP or DOWN arrow keys to move the folder where you want

How did you get it to work with AOL.  I thought AOL was web based?  I'd love to get an AOL email address as their SPAM filtering is exceptional.

well, it works with aol, set it up as imap.aol.com and smtp.aol.com  mark the box the says "server requires authentification for sending mail" otherwise it wont work but anyway, maybe thats the problem with my situation.  i know how to do what you said but everytime i get all my folders all set up, created and in order as soon as i shut it down open it back up and click on the account to retrieve any new mail...they are all gone again because i havent set them up on aol.  is there a way to mark certain folders as disconnected from the server? i dont want to have to go to aol and create a folder every time i need one on the bat.

You won't be able to create folders within the AOL account on TB, but you can create folders outside of the AOL account. These are known as "Common folders", available to all accounts.

Create your offline storage folders at the root level of the folders / accounts window and they will persist outside of the AOL connection and will survive a restart.

so if i understand correctly, the only way to keep folders thru a restart is to make them common folders.  i cant have them under a specific email account?  i would like to store folders under a specific email account but will they always disappear because they are not on aol?

The problem here is IMAP.

The folder struction within an IMAP account is governed by the server. Folder structure within a POP3 account or as common folders. This is the only reason I suggested using common folders. It's a workaround rather than a solution.

Some IMAP configurations do allow for local (non-synched) mail folders, but I don't use IMAP myself and when I did, I could never make it work quite right.

Perhaps there is a synchronisation option that will allow you to retain locally defined folders without having to reset the entire folder list from the AOL server.

Any IMAP users here that can help with this?

I'm not sure but do the emails also need to be deleted off the server as they are downloaded.  Perhaps that also needs to be done.  Thanks for the info.

You are correct - after applying filters to an IMAP account, you will need to do a purge/compress. The email 'seem' to be gone, but they are still in the IMAP folders.

I am thinking of modifying the filters to 'expunge' the folders after the mail has been moved. Sometimes the handshaking is not 100% and I have had to 'undelete' the message from the IMAP Folder.

Using the Tool Menu IMAP Commands, check the sync flag. Use Headers only.

Using the same tool you can create remote folders, not local folder that will sync.

Mulberry and PINE are the only IMAP clients that seem to do the local folder sync to a remote IMAP folder. This is normally found under 'offline' conditions in the manuals.

The Offline use The Bat! should be able to do this. They are very close with the Tool | Sync for use between two computers, why not extend this to be between the local machine and the server?

IMAP is one of the harder protocols for email clients to support properly/fully. The Bat has come a long way and hopefully continue to improve.

Not many endusers are using IMAP, they seem to be moving more to the WEBMail  (gmail, hotmail, AOL etc) which is something I try to avoid.
