Is this an inbox under an account or a folder where messages from several accounts reside?

Roelof may come up with a better one but;
If a folder not tied to an account make another inbox on the same level (inbox2?)
Drag the messages to it (I'd do it a few at a time)

When Empty does the inbox now compress? Even if it does delete it and wipe it then check and make sure that this folder is out of the tree structure on your hard drive. Then rename inbox2 to inbox

If it is one account's inbox consider moving the messages out, deleting and recreating the account then moving the messages back

Let Roelof get into this one before you replace an account though - he may have other easier tricks.

I am wagging my finger at you and scolding you now  ;) Move your messages to other folders and run the maintenance center OFTEN. This is so important that I have set up a keyboard shortcut so I can do it easily whenever I dump the trash.

Rubin,

In order to compress a folder you need the same amount of free space space as your folder uses. Basically compressing means copying all not deleted files into a new file.
Furthermore a 1.2 MB folder is rather big. You should try to use TB's filtering engine to sort your messages for you and set the less important folders to stronger purge options.
However that's the future, copy the messages yuou want to save to new folders (inside TB) When you've done so and there are no keepers left in your inbox that you haven't copied to another folder, close TB.
Browse with the explorer to the directory matching with your inbox (default is %appdata%/thebat/accountname/inbox) and delete the messages.tbi and messages.tbb files.
Start TB.
When downloading new messages TB will notice the missing files and create new ones.
