Virtual Folders?

Will you please explain how/why you use virtual folders?

Thanks,

Ron

What are the advantages of virtual folder compared to 'regular' folders?

Virtual folders aren't real folders. They're filters that act like they're folders and they're visualized as folders by TB.
But the messages they 'contain' are located in other (real) folders.

Suppose you've got this collegue with whom you're playing baseball too.
Your baseball messages get filtered in your baseball folder, your work messages get filtered in your work folder. But as this is your best pal you want to have his messages in a separate folder, but you don't want to disrupt your sorting system.
With a virtual folder you leave those messages in their proper folders, but still have the correspondence between the two of you in a single folder.

I'm not arguing, but I just don't understand the use of a virtual folder.

I'm not arguing either (well maybe I'm doing that now :-) ). I thought I gave you an answer with an example.

I don't use virtual folders myself, but some folks consider them the greatest thing after X-mas.

Messages in Virtual folders are links to real messages, You can define which messages from which folders/accounts will be displayed.

For example I am marking some messages with Flagged attribute and have Virtual folder for displaying all flagged messages in all folders in my primary account.

Next Virtual folder displays all todays messages from all folders, so I know what I received today and check this folder very often

Next Virtual folder displays messages related to our products, so all message with name of product are displayed in it even message stays in Inbox or it was filtered to other folder.

Because I don't understand the use of Virtual Folders, I wonder if I'm missing something? <smile>  I appreciate your reply, and I've looked at some examples in the help folder,  but I think I must be missing something that will make my e-mail life better!

The advantage of virtual folders is that you can 'put' an email in more than one folder. Do you use Gmail? It's essentially what Gmail calls Labels. You can have one message in more than one (virtual) folder. So in Roelof's example, your colleague's emails are properly filtered so that they go into work mail. Then you have a virtual folder that finds everything from that person that talks about baseball. Now you can go to that virtual folder and see everything he's said about baseball, without removing his emails from the work folder (and possibly missing something work-related).

Or another example - say you want all the emails about your holiday party in one folder. You have messages from your family, from friends, from companies (orders), etc. You can set up a virtual folder to collect party messages, without altering your normal filters - then when the party is over and you don't need those emails together any more, delete the virtual folder and all the emails are (still, they never moved) safely in their separate folders.

Thanks for that explanation
