Update policy for The Bat! v.4

11/07/2007
This notice about some modifications in update policy is brought to your attention due to transition to a new line of The Bat! v.4.

Registered users of The Bat! v.3 can continue working with The Bat! v.4.0.x without any limitations. For working with further The Bat! 4.x.x versions a new key is required.

On purchasing this new key registered users of any previous The Bat! version are granted a 30% discount. Previous key is not cancelled. Purchased keys can be used simultaneously in terms of the license agreement.

Users that purchase The Bat! v.4.0 can work with any further version of The Bat! 4.x.x. without restrictions.

Prices and types of the licenses remain the same.

Terms:
“registered users” – users that purchased The Bat! from RITLabs SRL official dealers.
“The Bat! v.4.x.x” – all The Bat! versions starting with 4.1.x and further, where ‘x’ is the minor number of the version.

For those who bought their license some days or some weeks ago, it is not normal. The discount should be more important.

ha ha, since the latest news on the rumor mill is that the new GUI of the Bat will not be availlable for 4.0 but then for 4.1 there is nothing much that makes this version upgrade different from the upgrades from 1-2 and 2-3, only some polishing of functions. Typical Ritlabs behaviour, thank you guys...

latest upgrade was more than 3 years ago, whats wrong Dominik? many apps requires 1 year subscription or 2 year subscription, 4th generation of The Bat! will be released after more than 3 years after 3.0.

Do You really expect, all new features will be implemented into 4.0?

May I repeat? And for those who bought their license some days or some weeks ago, it is not normal. The discount should be more important.

Actually the upgrade policy was looking fair enough to me at first. Long enough time to get to know the new version without the hassle of either having to pay or be hassled by the shareware notice. But then the news arrived that the new GUI would not be in 4.0

Knowing how Ritlabs treats promises since the time of the 1.x to 2.x switch, no, I did not expect them to deliver all new features for 4.0.
But with the big announcement on the webpage saying, I quote their own text:
Quote
The largest-scale changes were made in The Bat!’s interface. Users will see a totally new program. Together with Artem Gorbunov design bureau we created a modern interface that facilitates e-communication via The Bat! 4.0 and further releases. The new design affects every single item of the program from the main window to the smallest dialog boxes. However, we left the classic interface of the program for our most devoted users.
Sorry if I misunderstood this then. What is left of the announcement when you take the gui away from the 4.0 release? Improved present features, a lot of hassle for users using plugins, a new account wizard which is just not much use for existing users.

Where does it state that Version 4.0 will NOT include a new GUI?

It doesn't say so on the webpage but on the German user forum there was discussion whether a memebr of the beta list (or something like that) would be allowed to show the screenshots there. He answered he will ask and his next answer was thathe got the reply that it would make no sense since the new GUI would NOT come with 4.0.

And if you look at Marek's answer here, he does not deny that the GUI will not be implemented in 4.0. He even asks:

If that isn't a confirmation, then I don't know.
But by all means, draw your own conclusion, that's not my business what you think.

well I purchased v.3 nearly 3 years ago.
Having to pay $31.50 (30% off the current Pro price) to upgrade to v4 Pro seems sort of fair, and I'll do that if v.4 has new features & improvements that I need.
(although an upgrade price higher than 50% of the current product price is a bit too much IMO)

But say I purchased it yesterday (or recently) for $45 - having to pay $31.50 more a month later just to be up to date is surely not fair.
The fact I can use v.4.0.x for free means nothing actually - just that I'll have to pay extra 31.50 to use v.4 not right now, but a bit later when version number changes to 4.1.x

Such upgrade policy is inadequate, confusing and unfair.

It is also my opinion.

I bought two copies in the last couple of months..  So I will pay $63 right?

to Thomas Dahl : no, 2 licences costs 72$, upgrade for 2 licences will be 50,4$

So, when does v4 hit the streets? :|

Seems like the upgrade policy should be based on how long you've had your version, not the number. In other words, when you initially purchase The Bat, you get free upgrades for 2 years, regardless of how many releases come out in that year.

IMO you can't please everyone with any upgrade policy that does not enable users to upgrade for free to any version :)
For example rdean61's method will make those people cry out that buy The Bat! and the next version comes out 2.1 years after they bought it :)

I agree completely.

I have been testing The Bat at home for some time and would like to purchase.

As Ritlabs have announced this upgrade, and have said that by buying v3.99, I would not be able to use further versons of the v4 family (which, of course would be to eliminate bugs, amongst other things), I shall not buy now.

Basically Ritlabs are telling me to wait until v4 is available. But, as I need a new email client now, and cannot wait for v4 to appear, I'm afraid that Ritlabs have lost a potential customer.

Stephen

Well, after assurances that I'd be entitled to free updates to the v4 release, I purchased the Pro version v3.99.  And, I must admit, to now be told I'll be forced to pay for an update at 4.1x .. well, I'm sure this isn't quite the update assurance I thought I'd procured/understood!

I'm certain the overall feeling I'm left with must be akin to that of having been .. violated.  And, just a moment and I'll check .. yes indeed!!, I'm absolutely certain it was accomplished without benefit of any pre-lube!

I needn't tell you what you can do with your 30% off offer .. need I?  Past tonight, I will use your v3.99 Pro product only as required to export my mail to another client.  For a much longer period of time, however, you may rest assured, will I evangelize to anyone I can talk to, or write to, that they should not do business with Ritlabs!

A revelation!!!

You should know, Ritlabs, that I intend doing my best "work" here.  I can probably create accounts about as fast as you might wish to delete them.

For my next message, as soon as I get to my machine, I'll be sharing, with all who wish to read it, the email reply I received from YOU stating that v4 updates would, indeed, be free if I purchased v3.99.

Before I go .. are you folks sure I needn't tell you what you can do with your 30% off offer??

I have only just purchased the pro version of The bat and now that it is working I am very pleased.  With regard to your recently announced update policy.  This seems very fair for those that have enjoyed months or years using The bat but for new comers like myself I do feel the Update policy should recognise the limited use from date of purchase.
I am not adverse to paying for an update to 4.x.x beyond the free 4... but for those of us just joined it seems good and fair business to allow a more substantial upgrade discount.

I do hope you will consider this as it is a great product and customers need to be encouraged to upgrade and support the future releases.

All I hear is lip service and complaining.
Where the heck is v4??????????????????

Hi again, Ritlabs.

My email to you, which I sent on Wednesday, Sept. 05, 2007, informed you that I was on day 24 of my 30 day trial.  I asked if purchase of v3.99.3 now, pre v4's release would entitle me to free access to the v4 series. (I used that EXACT word .. series)

In your reply to me, on Friday, Sept. 07, 2007, you said:

Dear Mr. xxxxxxx,

The soon coming fourth version of The Bat! will be free for those who have purchased version 3.xx.

To anyone who's been dealing with these folks for any extended period of time ...

Generally, would you say this is typical observed behaviour for these Ritlab people .. lying to people before they screw them?  Or do they also manage to reverse the two at times?  What really galls me is that nowhere, between the lying and the screwing, do I remember getting a kiss!

I'm very upset with you folks, hunkered down there in your "Ritlab" .. how many people, total, did you manage to screw with this v4 update hooliganism??

Well, I'd definitely say they are not lying, they just found a "clever" way around their promise. You do get exactly this:

The 4th version of The Bat! is 4.0 but not 4.1.
I understand how you feel and to really answer your question, just based on this answer, I would not have bought 3.x but waited for the 4.0 release for a definite staement on their update policy. Becasue I experienced their statements before...

ok, this is just in on the frontpage:

11/19/2007  According to the new license policy, all The Bat! users that purchase the program after November 20, 2007 can use this key not only for The Bat! 3.x.x and 4.0 versions, but also for further The Bat! 4.x.x versions without additional payments or key update.
Hmm, well if you already bought it you might be able to talk to them about it and get them to reconsider your registration and make it also a 4.x able one. For all others thinking of buying the program NOW this is a good news.

I purchased The Bat, v3.65.03 Home Edition in January 2006. Acc. to Ritlabs:
"The registered users will receive: fully functional copy of the product without any time limitations; free updates within one major release."

But what exactly is considered a 'major release'? From (any) version 3 to (any) soon to be released version 4 would obviously be considered as such, but would I also have to pay for a new license if I want to upgrade to v3.99.29 Home Edition?

Thanks in advance,
Rob L.

No, a major release is a new number up front. If you bought 3.x you are free to upgrade to any 3.x version, even downgrade if you want :)
