Un-encrypt message base, is this possible?

I recently re-installed my Operating System (XP Professional SP2) and then installed the latest version of The Bat! Pro (v.3.99.25)

I had no trouble restoring all of my accounts and e-mails.

I also have "ABC Amber The Bat! Converter" installed. I have just tried to export certain message using ABC but I am unable to.

I believe this is because the message bases are encrpyted.

I need to use "ABC Amber The Bat! Converter" because the features it offers are unavilable from The Bat! itself.

HOW do I un-encrypt the message bases?

First backup all your messages and account stuff with the Bat's backup function, then uninstall the Bat (make a manual backup of your mail folder with zip or winrar just in case). Reinstall it (and use 3.99.29 - that's the latest one) and this time neither set a password or chose to encrypt the meassages (it's an option in the options, I *think* - I use Voyager and there Ritlabs does not give use a choice :( ). After this is done, reimport your backed up accounts and messages. They should now be unencrypted and useable by Amber...

Hi Anthony,

Dominik has you on sound footing.  Just to expand a bit, as I recently accomplished unencryption of my messages so Aid4Mail could work it's magic.

"Uninstall" isn't enough.  Once you've uninstalled, you MUST purge any references to ritlabs/RIT/bat (can't tell you exact entries/locations .. search the registry for any such suspected uninstall left-overs) from the registry.

Also, initiate a windows file search, deleting anything bat related you find there that you don't want (do not delete your backup that Dominik told you to make!).

Upon reinstall, if you don't get the message, and it's early into the install (it's PRE reloading any saved message bases), offering for the message bases to be encrypted, you'll have to uninstall and start over again, hacking at the registry.

If upon install you get the message offering the encryption option, victory!  Of course, select to NOT use encryption, then select/point to your backup when offered and your mail will not be encrypted any longer.

This is a "feature" I'd like to see added, internally, within bat .. the ability to select conversion to encrypted/unencryped with a click.

Good luck.

Hi Dominik and Hi Bubba,

Many thanks for your replies.

I shall attempt to do what you have suggested as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, my PC crashed this morning and upon re-starting The Bat! I found that the inbox of my most important account had become corrupted. The Maintenance Centre was unable to repair the message base.

I then tried to restore from my daily backup, but The Bat! complained "Password is incorrect or archive is damaged", followed by another message, "The file E:\Backups\TB-Backup.tbk is not a valid The Bat! maintenance archive".

Needless-to-say I am finding this a little frustrating as I now have a damaged message base, the contents of which are encrypted and the backup is useless.

I shall endeavour to resolve this and then post back to the forum with news of my success, or not!

Hi Dominik and Hi Bubba,

Finally found the time to un-install and re-install The Bat! and now I am able to use ABC again.

Thanks for your helpful information.
