THE BAT FAILS TO WORK WITH AOL, THE BAT FAILS TECH SUPPORT NO HELP

Hello:

I have the Bat on my laptop PC which connects to the internet through a Sprint Modem Card.

I have entered the protocols correctly at least as far as tech support is concerned.

I can read only RANDOM old emails, can load ZERO new emails and can send ZERO emails.

Is thee any fix ti this or is the BAT just a useless program?

John Kercheval'

To answer the second part of your last message first, no The Bat!isn't a useless program, i't has been handling my mail for seven and a half years by now and hasn't failed me once (that I can remember).

Whether there's a fix for your problem remains to be seen though as you've given us rather limited info.

You can't retrieve or send mail and you've contacted  tech support, whose tech support, AOL's?
What error do you get when you try to receive mail, what error do you get while sending?

When I click on a message in my inbox I get "Noo Message Loaded"

All Protocols configured properly . I'm using PGP and A Sprint Pantech Modem card.

When I try to send a message I get "Cannot Connect to server"

The Bat fails on all activities. I've sent at least ten email help tickets. No useful advice given.

I'm not looking for guesses.

PGP has no bearing to your problem as it has nothing to do with mail retrieval.

In TB go to the menu and pick:
Account -> Properties -> Transport -> Protocol logging
Here you can enable the protocol logging for sending and retrieving mail.
Next you try to send and you try to receive. Afterwards you can disable the logging.
Now post the file you created with the protocol logging to this forum. That file will contain all info between you and your server, that might include your password, you'd better delete any visible passwords.

I'm not interested in guesses either, but please give me some info to work with. What kind of account  have you got with AOL, pop3, imap, something else. With the sole comment that it doesn't work you won't get a solution via the web.

Ok we are now getting somewhere &* thanks.

When I do this:

In TB go to the menu and pick:
Account -> Properties -> Transport -> Protocol logging

I do not see the phrase "Protocol Logging" The first three are there.

JOhn

HOWEVER, If I go to Account- View Log then I get this output:

BUT remember the output of that last email was NOT from the keystroke sequence:

Account -> Properties -> Transport -> Protocol logging

Okay, so you're using IMAP. Unfortunately I'm a bit weak on IMAP, as for every 100 imap servers there 101 different implentattions of the imap protocol. :-(
Here are some things to check.

Account -> Properties -> Mail management
Are Synchronise folders at startup and at every x minutes enabled?

Account -> Properties -> Mail management -> IMAP fine tune (to get here you need to press the + sign before 'Mail management', same goes for transport and protocol logging)
The optimum fine tune options vary for every ISP and as I don't use AOL, I can't really advise you here. Maybe somebody else can. If not you can try things, that looks like guessing, but anything is better than no connection at all. :-)
And you'll be able to set the options to their previous settings any time.

The Bat! is not working properly with AOL. It hasn't up to now and it seems there is no real interest to make it work correctly.
In the german user forum we tried to track down what is happening but couldn't.
Things we found is that even though TB! is supposed to take account changes right away on confirmation, IMAP accounts seem to need a restart to accept the changes.

Another strange thing we found is that the Windows (XP) firewall seems to block AOL at times...

Overall, it proves again, that IMAP is definitely not a strong point of The BaT!

Roelof:

First, I apologize for being a real jerk earlier I'm just frustrated as heck here & I REALLY need the service to manage my email. I've been working on this for days.

I just bought The Bat last week so I'm using the most current version, despite that we are net getting the same screens here.

When I go to mail management the word "Synchronize" does not appear at all.I've got a bunch of blank spaces and ONE checked box: "When Account is SElected" All others are unchecked.

I can check one that says "Automatically connect to server at startup which I just checked.
Checking that does nothing. Still cannot read 90% of messages and can send none.

FYI, I think there is some MAJOR issue I'm missing here. It is as though The Bat is a totally unfnctional program for me.

John K.

One follow on issue tyhat relates to reading not sending:

In the right hand pane where the messages are located, if the envelope logo on the left is "lit" I can read the message if not, I cannot.

This does not relate to the fact I cannot send messages.

John

Dominick:

If what you are saying is true. what emails does the BAT work with? NONE?

AOL is a huge service it should work fine. Also when I was sold the Bat the Bat sellers assured me it worked with AOL.

It works great and I really love it with Pop3 accounts. IMAP is the protocol that is just a problem child with The Bat.
I always wonder why strange stuff like "Mail Chat" gets implemented but IMAP is not working correctly (personally I have tested this with AOL and Gmail - but in the german user forum the verdict is just that TB!+IMAP=BIG PROBLEMS))

Dominick:

I understood none of that. I need to retrieve enmail from AOL. Hotmail, Yahoo.

Words like POP Imap etc are meaningless to me. I need the exact keystrokes to get my mail.

John

Since the Bat fails to work, what is the procedure for getting my money back. A mail retreiever that cannot retrieve mail is useless.

John Kercheval

POP, IMAP, SMTP are essentials of email...
And out of the box, without a third party program, TB! is not able to work with Hotmail, Yahoo and that is an essential "feature" of those email services.

Dominik:

Thanks.

So if you want to use the Bat to collect email (yahoo, hotmail, or AOL) you are out of luck.

That is what you are saying. The Bat is great as long as you don't need to retrieve or send email with it!

Got it.

John

Since The Bat cannot collect or send email, does it have any other uses?

BTW, The Bat just locked up. Had to force quit and restart.

John

Ok, LIKE MAGIC the Bat is getting better w/o any adjustments from me for READING email.

I still can sebd anything. I get messages that say things like "cannot connect to server, " etc.

It says make sure you are configured for ougoing mail s,mtp authentication.

Ok folks, I've got it fixed. For the benefit of all here it is:

1) I can now read All messages which were all for AOL accounts. The fix? None. Over time and with zero adjustments I just had the "reading ability" imparted on me from above.

2) Before I could send ZERO emails. Now it seems I can send them all. The fix? I went to PGP and cleared and reloaded all of the messaging settings then rebooted the computer & The Bat. That SEEMS to have fixed it.

New Issues:

1) I am Still looking for suggestions as to how to enlarge the fonts/bview so I can read things better.

2) I am TOLD The Bat can read Yahoo and hotmail accounts with the proper settings and plug ins. Can someone tell me how to do this? Right now, I am reading my AOL accounts but none of my three yahoo accounts nor my one hotmail account.

THANKS! If this really continues to work it is a big improvement.

That's not what I'm saying, there ARE other email providers in the world and The Bat! actually works with the good ones.
Neither Hotmail, Yahoo or AOL are good email providers. These either want you to use their stupid software or access them via webpages.
At least AOL changed in so far that you can access your mail via IMAP.
But this is screwed because AOL has setup its imap server in non standard way that screws with The Bat!'s poor imap support. Good it is now working for you. PRobably a screw  up by something like firewall, anti virus or whatever.

You want to use The Bat! with Yahoo or Hotmail, look in the  net for something called pop2hotmail, pop2yahoo or something like that. Costs again something and it's another program that runs in the background...

Did you know that The Bat! is a shareware program? You could have easily used and tried The Bat! without paying all at once for thirty days or so. Could have spared you some grief...

Professor John Kercheval!

Please if it possible, write step by step HOW ADJUST The Bat for AOL.

I red the posts but understood nothing....

I so understanding You have successful tests?

Not sure if this was addressed in another post or not but thought it may help someone.   This is how I was able to fix the problem of not being able to 'send' emails for AOL.

Properties > transport

Send email:
smtp.aol.com / Port: 25 / Connection: Regular
(click on the authentication tab and put a check mark by the 'preform SMTP authentication....'  Make sure that 'same user/password as for mail retrieval' is selected.  Place a checkmark also by the 'use pop before smtp authentication'  (I did not check the 'require secure authentication' box.)

For Receive email:
pop.aol.com / Port 110 / Connection: Regular

Not sure if it will work the same for you, but it did for me so might give it a try.  btw, i didn't find my firewall or virus scan to make any difference when disabling them.

Hi,

I am sorry to intrude, but perhaps i can help. I have been using The Bat!, in short TB since last 6-7 years and found it to be perfect and best, although it has some glitches, but then which email client does no. I would rate in 100% good. I do not use AOL, so cannot help, but if you need assistance for Yahoo / Gmail, POP and SMTP emails, I can help as I use these on TB myself. I am not strong on IMAP as i have never used the same.
