Any good reason to upgrade to V4 - any real advantage ?

Just wonder - is there anything really better in V4 comparing to v 3.99 ? Any good reason for it ?

What I don´t like and miss in the present version is

1) occassional freezing - Bat stops responding
2) not able to close all the quick search filters at once (so you have to close them one by one or to scroll horizontally)
3) not able to close the mail ticker without opening the email (sometimes you want just to close it and you are not interested to read the email at the moment and at the same time you don´t want to have the mail ticker there)

Are any of these improved in V4 ?

IMO there are no really important new features in v.4 to justify an upgrade. But that's for me - this is too personal and depends on which features you mostly use.
For example many people here want improved handling of html, which v.4 is said to provide to some extent, but I don't care at all about it.
If 1/2/3 are your only problems, better stick with v.3 for now.
2 and 3 doesn't seem to be real problems, and you can be sure that v.4 has far more bugs than v.3
I'll test v.4 again 3-4 months after the release of 4.1

Version 4.0 has many improvements, I like and use many of them. I really do not understand, how still can somebody tell, there are no really improvements, You must be blind...

- program supports automatic decompression of Winmail.dat files sent from MS products. Tell me one alternative client which supports it...

- Microed editor was completely rewritten to fully support Unicode

- searching in viewer was rewritten, hit Ctrl+F and You will see

- Spellchecker SSCE engine was improved to support ISO encodings, so many languages including Eastern Europe are supported now

- Spellchecker HUNSPELL engine was implemented, so languages from OpenOffice.org can be used now

- There is a great and unique feature about Spellchecking - it is possible to use more engines and more languages at once. Again, which app allows this?

- Viewer profiles were implemented, so You can select more fonts and colours for message and set this to be used automatically

- image viewer GUI was completely rewritten, CMYK support was implemented

- new feature Address history for tracking history of people You are communicating with, You can view sent or received messages through folders

- downloading images to HTML messages was implemented

- folder columns and tabs were rewritten

- S/MIME support was improved, Qualified certs are supported, checking Timestamp server was implemented

- GUI was improved

so no real improvements??

I have to agree. And the bugs we are finding are minor.

Well, I must agree with "bigg one". I've downloaded an tried every new version since 3.99.24.  Yet, I still run 3.99!

The newer versions have either not worked correctly and/or the changes were so slight that I couldn't justify the risk of upgrading.  Reading the Marek's list was interesting but most of that stuff means very little to my day to day e-mailing.

Maybe I'm just really happy with The Bat!

As a Voyager user there is no alternative to using the v4 version. The Voyager version before that had many bugs that were fixed in the 3.9x versions of TB! but never got a Voyager version.
Most of the listed features is really nothing I care anbout myself, except the new spell checking features.

Marek,

You have made a nice list.  But you do not mention a single killer improvement.  Rather a series of bug fixes.

Full HTML support would have been nice.. instead we get an irritating URL blocker that cannot be switched off.  I would rather stick with the earlier versions than have this feature.  I and all my friends who use The Bat simply click accept or block on every URL check request.` So where is the decurity in this???

Where can we download the pervious versions of The Bat?

the last final before 4.x was 3.99.29. I'm sure a search machine can help you find it.
I wouldn't want to go back, especially since even if it were bug fixes than I'd rather have those and as 4.0.x is a free upgrade I'm all good.
The URL manager really needs tweaking but as I have my view set to first view text and then html I don't really care that much. I seldom look at the html view anyway.

You can disable the automatic appearance of the URL manager, simply uncheck the 'show this window automatically' option at the bottom of the URL manager. Basically you'll have TB's previous behaviour back.

And though you an your friends allow everything, I for instance don't do that. Security isn't a program thing (though a program needs to offer these things), security is a mentality.
