Default Account for Common Folders

Hi,

I have six email accounts and a series of Common Folders into which I save messages. When I reply to a message in a Common Folder, it always defaults to one of my email accounts. I would like to change this default account but I cannot find a way at the moment. Anybody got any ideas?

I'm using The Bat! ver.3.99.25.

Regards,

John

Hello,

For a Common folder:

> Properties > Identity
Edited: Sacles - 25 April 2008 07:24:42

I tried it but all the Identity seems to do is change the "Reply To" address etc. It does not change the SMTP server which will be used for the outgoing message.

When I reply to a message in a Common Folder, I want the status bar along the bottom of the email editor to show a different active account than the one that it is currently showing. In this way, when I send the message, I can be sure that it is using the correct SMTP server. Any ideas?

By the way I upgraded The Bat! to ver.4.0.24 hoping it would make a difference but it desn't.

Why do you want change your SMTP?

I have several accounts but only one SMTP.

Each of my six email accounts has its own SMTP server. At present when I Reply to a message in a Common folder, it defaults to one particular account which means it defaults to one particular SMTP server. I would like to change the default to be another account, i.e. another SMTP server.

I may still use the original default account from time to time but I would like to change the default behaviour.

Even if you have several suppliers of addresses, you can use only a single SMPT: your internet access provider.

It is useless to have several SMTP. It is often disadvised.

Ignoring the SMTP issue for now, I still think that it's silly that whenever I Reply to a message in a Common folder, the email editor always defaults to a particular account which shows up in the status bar as the "active account" and this cannot be changed.

The Bat! has legendary configurability and yet on this issue it seems to be sadly lacking.

You can easily do this in one of several ways.
First the account CAN be changed and that is the best way to go. Click on the status bar and it will list all your accounts and choose the one you want.

If you must change it so a folder always uses a specific account go into the folder properties / templates and create appropriate templates for New, Reply, forward etc that include the macro
%ACCOUNT="Google GROUPMAIL" for instance Google Groupmail being the name of one of my accounts

A safer way would be to make a quick template with ONLY the %ACCOUNT="Google GROUPMAIL" and change each email on the fly.

Thanks for the help. Templates does seem the way to go and I'll work on it.
I was aware that I could change the active account but I would have preferred not to take that extra step each time.
I can now see that this question has been raised a few times before on this forum but without resolution and I'll just have to understand that it's a limitation of the software. It seems a shame though that if you change your ISP and corresponding primary email address but would like to keep the old emails intact in The Bat!, your old ISP will remain the default account in the Common Folders simply because it was the first account created.

I am just a user, so take this for what it's worth; all your accounts including an entry for the default account are in the registry under
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT\The Bat!\Users depot]

You might consider joining the TBUDL mailing list. A lot of users read that and you can get answers faster than in here. It is not a high volume list

Delete the account that is being used as active account.
Close TB and start it again.
Add a new account with the same name as the deleted account, TB will recognize your old settings and message base.

When the old account isn't valid anymore and only kept as archive, you can change the account settings for the account to use the servers and settings of your current active account or alter its templates to use the %Account= macro.

I did as you said. I first deleted the account and after re-starting TB, the default account when replying to a message in the Common Folders did indeed switch to another account. I was quite happy with this situation.
When I created a new account and gave it the same name as the deleted account, TB re-built the message base and re-instated the old account. However, it also re-instated its status as the default account for the Reply in Common folders. In effect I was back at square one.

I'll do as you say and when my old primary email account has fully expired, I'll change it's settings be be a duplicate of the new primary account. I'll probably also play around with the %Account= macro.

Just to let the forum know that the default address has now changed to be the new primary account. I assume that Roelof's advice to delete the account, close and re-start The Bat! and then create the account again was the trick that did it.

As I said in my previous message it hadn't worked and that was definitely the case for a day or so but then it seemed to changeover without any intervention from me and has worked fine ever since.

Many thanks for everyone's help.
