importing messages from Outlook Express

I'm having trouble using the Mail Import Wizard to import my messages from Outlook Express 6.

It first asks me to browse for the Outlook Express directory where the .dbx files are stored.

It then gives an error message saying "Cannot find MS Outlook Express directory to perform import."

Sometimes the problem is that I have more messages than it can handle (30,000, close to 1GB). So I remove some of the .dbx files to bring it down to a more manageable size. But I still get the same error.

I think it's looking for more than just .dbx files. Can you tell me what?

p.s. I tried dragging and dropping from OE to generate .eml files, then importing the .eml files, but I lose the "received" times for all the messages.

I remember having a similar problem long ago.
Create a new folder like C:\OE\ and copy all the .dbx files into that folder, then try importing from it.
This did the trick for me, I think theBat may get confused by very long paths containing unusual characters like {}.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I tried importing from c:\temp and it didn't help.

I think theBat looks in the Registry to find where OE files are, but maybe you don't have the registry entry or it's wrong. When I try to do that, I'm not prompted to browse for a folder, just OE accounts are listed.

Try changing the .dbx location from OE, as follows:
click Tools, Options, tab Maintenance, click Store Folder, click Change , and select a new folder like C:\temp\. Maybe after doing this, OE will set what theBat looks for properly, and then it will be possible to import.

If this doesn't help, you may use filemon & regmon tools from sysinternals.com to see what theBat looks for but can't find. Or try importing on another PC or virtual machine.
