4.0.28.3 installer demands removal of previous version

When I try to install 4.0.28.3 over the top of 4.0.28.1, Windows Installer throws up a message saying that a previous version exists and must first be removed. This is something new - in the past, I've always been able to install the latest version over the top of the previous one. Why the unwelcome change, please? Many thanks.

they probably messed something in the msi package.
(I guess all installers first silently uninstall an existing version if found, but something went wrong with this one, or with your Windows Installer database)
You may backup(export) the registry key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT
to a .reg file and perform the uninstall, then install the new version. If needed after the new installation merge the .reg file back to restore all the settings kept there (although theBat keeps in the registry mostly non-important stuff, everything really important is in the mail folder and shouldn't be affected by the uninstall/install procedure).

Thanks. I'll have to think about this. The trouble is, if later on I needed to reinstall 4.0.28.3, I'd have to go through the `remove and install' routine again. It would obviously be better if RitLabs issued 4.0.28.3 with a properly working installer.

you may search for a tool named "Less MSIérables" or "lessMSI" - it's .msi unpacker and you can simply get the individual files included in the package, without any 'installation'.
Backup the current files and replace them with the new ones, and you'll have the latest version. To revert to the old one, replace newer files with the backed up older ones.

I'd like to know the difference between 4.0.28.1 and 4.0.28.3?
Is it worth it to go through the procedure of uninstalling 4.0.28.1 to get the latest version?

Using The Bat! v5.0.36.2

It got rid of a few bugs (considering your avatar that isn't a real issue for you) like fixing the bug the that stopped 4.0.28.1 from working with Exchange, a real show stopper according to those that were using that as a server.
But here's everything:

What's new in 4.0.28.3 since 4.0.28.2:
[-] (#0005795) Import option of 'Run external action' filter action broken
[-] (#0006167) Voyager is adding redundant lines to global.ini
[*] glyphs for trash in folder tree replaced
[*] icons fixed for address book quicksearch popup and memo popup menus
[-] (#0007194) Folder|Check for viruses command was disabled until a new anti-virus plug-in was added
[*] (#0006632) Folders with all messages read should not change their position in the list of the unread Folders tab [before moving to the next folder]
What's new in 4.0.28.2 since 4.0.28.1:
[*] glyphs for trash, copy, cut icons changed
[*] Since this version, the option to use the "X-Mailer" header is turned OFF, even if you had it ON in a previous version of The Bat! You can go to the Options/Preferences and turn it ON again, but we don't recommend it.
[*] icons added into address book/quick search popup menu
[-] There were temp files left after importing messages from other mail clients.
[-] (#0007187) Using MS Exchange (MAPI) messages stay on the outbox without being sent
