Any good free antivirus you like for The Bat?, Alternatives to AVG that integrate well with The Bat

Hello good folks,

I'm a long time Bat user, still using v3.85 here and happy with it. I had been using the free AVG for a long time without problems until I recently discovered that the latest version, in addition to being a huge
resource hog that has slowed my computer to a crawl, is installed by default as such low kernel level that at least one of the processes cannot be removed in Task Manager EVEN WITH FULL ADMINISTRATOR PRIVILEGES!

This is of course unacceptable behavior, and truly mind-boggling coming from a computer "safety" company as Grisoft claims to be.

I'm looking for a good, free antivirus alternative for both my PC and my wife's. Something that would easily integrate with TheBat is of course preferred. A program that's reasonable on CPU/memory loads would be icing on the cake.

Any good choices out there?

What about free Avast Home Edition? Been using Avast for the past five years and it's never let me down. The latest Avast is working very well with the TB 4.0.28.1.

BTW What is the specific build number of the TB version 3.85 you are using? I am trying to identify the most stable version/build among TB versions 3 and 4 builds...

Hope you'll too like Avast Home and thanks in advance for the advice!

Thanks, I will look Avast up.

My TB version is 3.85.03, it's very stable and works fine for my dozen or so email accounts. I have learned the hard way NOT to "upgrade" to the latest and greatest so I know where you're coming from...

If you wonder what the differences are b/w Avast Home and Pro, in theory and reality they're very small. Here is the comparison chart.

Avast is no longer recommended. Too late in the signatures of new viruses.

I am getting nearly daily Avast iAVS updates lately and the updates are at least a couple of times a week. My PCs have not been affected due to delayed updates for the past 5 years.

Antivir Premium is an excellent anti-virus (better than the free version of course).

Sacles, I appreciate the reply and the links but if you refer to my OP I've had MAJOR issues with AVG so that's out, and Avira is not free...

There is a free version of Antivir: http://www.free-av.com/ but the Premium version is not very expensive.

I have dumped any|all AVs as soon as I discovered this: the Software Restriction Policy.

Read this article, follow the advises - and you will NEVER need to depend on so called "AV" bloatware.

Nor is Kaspersky, but it has the built-in Bat! integration you inquired about.

Have you tested either of the new 2009 versions, KIS (suite with firewall) or KAV (antivirus only)?

I was using exactly the KAV (it's free AOL-branded incarnation "AVS").
It does have the plug-in to use with the Bat!, they worked well (I must admit).

However, if you are LUA, if the SRP is in place - you are protected much better than if you are "admin+AV".

Also, the nice program called SandBoxIE adds the icing to the cake - it will protect your Documents from any|all saboteur efforts of a malicious web-page (if a page is rigged with a JavaScript or JAVA applet or similar crap).

I upgraded yo the paid version of AntispamSniper. I had zero problems with either the free or paid versions.

Antispam SERVANT <- STAY AWAY!!!! Adware and spyware even if you pay

I recommend ESET Nod32 - very fast but not free..
