Hi,
I had a problem with my hard drive, now I've replaced it and I am trying to get back to my The Bat mailbox.

Unfortunately I cannot import the data files into my new The bat installation.

The files are kinda strange, they are located in strange folder names, for example 0943DD6E.8BF. In all of those folders I have a messages.ebb file and a messages.ebi file.

I cannot import those files. Any suggestions?

these strange folder names were generated by the file recovery tool you used?

Make an account in theBat, make sure the same password for on-the-fly encryption is specified.

1. In the account, make a new folder, name it like Test. Close theBat.

2. Find the physical folder - with Windows Explorer go to the theBat's mail folder, inside there should be a folder named like the account, and inside a folder named Test. (instead of Test you may use a name guaranteed to be unique, then do a search to locate the physical folder)

3. Move some messages.ebb + messages.ebi to the physical folder. Start theBat. If it can read the messages, you'll see which previous folder that was. Rename the folder in theBat (make sure phys. folder is not displayed / locked by Explorer, and theBat will likely rename it too) , or close theBat and rename the physical folder in Explorer.

4. Goto 1 and repeat with next messages.ebb + messages.ebi

Hi,
I've made it and now when I open TheBat and go to the Test folder it doesn't show any messages there (the messages.ebb and messages.ebi files are in the physical folder).

May be I have to convert the messages.ebb so The Bat can read it?

is theBat configured to use encryption, with the same password as it was before ?

Have you tried Tools -> Import Messages -> From theBat msg base -> choose some .ebb ? If yes, what it says?

Unfortunately it's pretty much possible recovered files to be damaged, don't you have a backup made before the HDD problem ?

When I try to import an .ebb file it remains like a new message in the folder and when I select it nothing happens.

I dont know why it counts the whole ebb file like 1 message?

it's possible that the .ebb is corrupt, in this case theBat will not be able to read it.
What is the size of the .ebb file?

Does the same happen for any .ebb you try to import?

Same happens with all the ebb files mate.
The sizes of different ebb files I have are different - from 2MB to 1GB so it seems that the emails are there, but not possible to import.

I've managed to start my windows account on the corrupted HDD and managed to backup almost all the emails from the bat.

So thanks very much for helping me out,
that bat is very strange with different file formats...MS outlook may be piece of shit but at least keeps everything in one pst file.

The positive thing in all this is that you're now convinced regular backups should be made :)

Actually theBat also keeps everything in one file, but per folder. Isn't it the same in Outlook?
I doubt it keeps absolutely everything in a single file.
IMO the way theBat keeps data is nearly perfect, it's very easy to create a backup and to restore everything or parts from it, settings are separate from messages, everything is in one folder which you can simply zip to have a complete backup, and nothing essential is stored in the registry.

BTW I had some problems with encrypted message bases in the past. Since then I use normal message bases, but keep my whole mail folder in a TrueCrypt container. To backup everything, I just copy the container.
