Unable to open URLs from within emails in BAT v3.x, URLs in emails return "cannot be displayed" default page errors

The Bat V3.x  + WinXP SP1 fully patched.
A fault developed when opening weblinks (URLs) sent to me in emails.
No links will work any more, instead I either get the default IE6 error page "This page cannot be displayed", or Mozilla announces that the page cannot be found depending on which is the default browser.

Curiously the addressbar of IE6 will then show:
http://"http://www.bbc.co.uk   depending on the URL

So the BAT is doing something pretty special with the HTTP:// part of addresses.

My PC is clear of spyware, malware and viruses. IE6 otherwise works 100% as does Firefox & Mozilla.
The latest patch to V 3.0.1.33 made no difference.

Any ideas of a fix? Things to check?

The fault lies with the "file association" settings for HTML type links. This has become corrupted. And this would be system-wide, not just for The Bat! since The Bat! does nothing special with links other than submit them to the windows file association sub-system.

You can check this in Windows Explorer by looking at Tools .. Folder options .. File Types. Find HTML files in the list, click the "Advanced" button and see what the "open" function has as a setting if you click the "Edit" button.

Don't change anything here unless you're sure of what you're doing, but I'm almost sure you'll find something there to explain what's happening.
