Hosed by Virus Removal Tools, Removal Tools set The Bat back to no config

Hi All,

I recently had a nasty fight with a rootkit and some assortment of Viruses. I won the battle but now I'm tending to the wounded. The Bat was a casualty...it's asking me for the setup information when I open it up like I just installed it which has me kinda worried. I can see the folder where I had all my mail going and need to get that mail back. My last backup is very old and I'd lose about 1/2 my mail but it would setup almost all my accounts again. What are my choices? Is there a way to restore from the backup and suck the mail out of the old directory structure back into the client?

Thanks!

close theBat.
Start Regedit and go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT\The Bat!

In the right pane locate 'Working Directory' and change value data to the path to the physical folder where your mail is.
Then start theBat and it'll hopefully find everything.
If there is no 'Working Directory' , create it (of type REG_SZ, or new string value)

If the above registry key does not exist, when started theBat should ask you in which physical folder to keep mail - just pick the folder where it is already.

ok got it all working again.

Changing the entry in the registry would half work. (I tried it too) You would have to go in a recreate all your accounts. The good news is that once the file structure is there you just match the "account name" and the "folder name" it will pick up all the account settings including your password so you'd be back in business.

what did I do? I restored the old bat datapoint which had all my accounts except two, then i copied the whole file structure over the new location, then i just had to add the two accounts i was missing and as i stated above all the settings were there, just had to match the folder name to the account name and it picked them right up. no mail lost.

I have to file this away in case this happens again  :) oh and make a more regular backup!!!

Thanks for your help. The first way would be easier if you knew it right away  :-)
