Few questions and potential bug report (trash and outbox do not empty), global inbox, html format, upgrade, cache

Hi
My questions:
1. Recently checking my email folder I noticed that trash, outbox (and sent mail too I think) were wasting hundreds of mbytes on my HD. After emptying those the files there would stay big. Had to delete them manually. I use version 4.0 and I remember I had this problem once before..is it maybe connected with the option "delete attached files when the message is deleted from the trash folder", that I just found ?
I have enabled to store the attachments in a separate folder but still most of them are stored in message files.

1b. by the way what is really stored in the "cache" folder? At the moment I have 1500 files there and many of them are 0 bytes...crap.
What if I delete this manually ?

2. On some accounts I would like to get incoming messages into one inbox (like it's been in Outloook by default ever since)
Is that/will that be possible ? How to create a global inbox?

3. how to change the default format of outgoing messages (for new email) - couldn't find it anywere and wanted to switch to html instead of text

4. how much will it be if I want to upgrade to the latest 4.x version ? Or can I download it and just upd ate keeping existing se ttings?

1a) if You delete a message or move/copy a message to other folder, it stays in msgbase until You remove them by compacting folder, which removes them completely

1b) cache folder includes images downloaded to HTML messages from trusted remote hosts, You can simply delete it

2) You can create common folders and move messages to them via filtering system.

Or leave them as they are and create common virtual folders, which will display links to messages

3) open Account properties, select Templates, select template You want to change and in Format menu, select HTML

4) upgrade costs 70% of full price so 24,5USD or 31,5USD for home or professional

1) Like (almost) all mail clients TB stores its messages in one file per folder. It's rather ineffecient to really delete a single message, as that would mean you've got to rewrite the whole file.
Like all other similar programs (mail clients, databases), TB marks the message as read in the index file.
The message will only be deleted when you compress the folder. You can do that more or less automatically on exit by enabling:
account -> properties -> options -> compact all folders on exit
Or you can do it manually every now and then via:
folder -> compact (or purge+compact)
That's only for the selected folder, you can also pick multiple folders manually, that's via:
folder -> maintenance centre

1b) When is closed normally then it'll remove the temporary files created in the cache folder during the recent session.
When TB is closed otherwise (error, task manager or by shutting down the cmputer) it's possible that the temp files won't be deleted.
It's save to do so manually.

2) The only way to get all incoming mail in a single folder is by creating filters that arrange this for you. That could either be a commom filter or a bunch of account related filters.
The global inbox can either be the inbox of one of your accounts or a common folder. That latter option has some advantages when you reply to a message.

3) options -> preferences -> Viewer/Editor -> Default editor for text

4) You can download the most recent version and install it on top of your current setup and it will keep all current settings. Whether it's free or not depends on when you registered TB. In case you registered V4 then all V4.x versions are free upgrades. If you registered V3, then V4.0 was still free but you've got to pay an upgrade fee for V4 in order to use versions from V4.1 and up.
You can see what version you registered in the message with the key block.

Great that works! In the account>templates I'm either blind or there's no "format" menu anywhere ;P
I have 4.0

I have only "compress" option. And I see it's being done even when I have disabled it on all accounts

Thanks for help. I need to work on this common filter but I see it will be tough (how to make all mail from certain account to come to specific folder)

Is Ritlabs ever going to introduce standard global inbox
i.e. set the incoming mail of each account to each folder - is it that difficult ?!?

I don't think it's too difficult to introduce a standard global inbox, but it's just contrary to the way TB is oriented.
Apart from that I think that a global inbox is somewhat contra-productive when you're using IMAP accounts.
Apart from that seeing what message arrives in what account makes it easier to set your priorities in deciding what to read first. I wouldn'tr like one global inbox at all, I'm filtering my messages on arrival over 100-200 folders.

I am using more than 50 accounts (of course, there are many accounts for testing purposes only ;-) and I have virtual folders monitoring important inboxes or folders I am working in most often - every account has different setting which depends on its usage and when I am replying, specific account template assigned to this account is used, which is most important thing.

BTW The Bat! has most powerful template and macro system with folder identities support, if You start to use this, You can not live without it :-)

Jeeez guys are you e-mail addicts ?!

Reolef how many days of your life have you already wasted reviewing all those folders? or perhaps you review ones with lower priority like only once a week?ok that can be an idea.
But first without so many email accounts and issues in them you - as a standard internet user - want a global inbox where you can review all incoming mail at once i.e. not clicking between folders/accounts - and there removing what's not necessary to leave and then sorting throwing the rest into appropriate folders

I like the availibity of all those advanced features but hell if I don't need to use them yet why do you take away the BASIC feature from me (I don't care how TB is "oriented")

OK I don't want to start a discussion about approaches/habits to email and didn't want to insult anybody. Probably everybody had his/her best way

BUT my point is: if TB is to be an advanced client then those many ways should be possible for all users!
For me, at present, it's not worth the investment of getting to know the filtering system and spending time on setting all the rules for all accounts...seeems like hours!

creating (common) virtual folder is easy and You will see all messages from all monitored folders in one virtual folder. This will not spend hours, but minutes!

As I wrote, this is more useful than global inbox, because messages are stored in accounts with their specific indentities, so when I reply to message from personal account, template and identity is used from this account.

OK seems it was easy ;P
I thought it's necessary to set-up filters for everything
