Incremental Backup stalling, Daily Backup hangs at the same point each day
 
Hi,

I bought The Bat! for three reasons - great message filtering, template options and backup facilities. It's been fine handling the first two, but the backup function I'm using (incremental every day at 7pm) has stopped working for the second time. The first time (not long after installing) I contacted support and they recommended a number of things, suggesting that an imported message may be corrupt and needed to be identified and removed. The only way to do this was to laboriously remove message subfolders and retry the backup until it worked.

As part of the cleanup process before starting this debugging, I stumbled upon what I thought was the real problem: a main folder had no messages in it - when I added a message, the backup worked, and has been until a week ago. I get the same problem: backup hangs when processing a specific main folder - when I cancel, I get Thread Error: Access in denied (5).
I went back and deleted all messages since the last successful backup - no difference. This says to me it's not a specific message that's the problem. Surely others have had backup problems like this? Now I don't trust The Bat! backups at all.

I'm running the lastest Home version.

Can anyone help?

just don't use theBat for backups.
Use Winrar in command line mode - it can update an existing archive, backup only files modified in the last X days etc.
It can't make incremental archives so the archive size will likely be bigger, but both backup and restore will be far more reliable.
There are free alternatives like 7zip etc.
 
having the same problem.

this, among all the small nagging usability issues around the backup is quite a bit of a turn-off.
- I can't rearrange windows while...
- I can't read messages while the backup is running
- I can't start writing an email while...
- can't minimise the windows...
- can't stop the process instantly, takes a while to stop even at the best of times.

It's just a messed-up feature.

It can't be an issue with imported messages; it hangs on the outbox of one of my accounts.  So that response is bs.

oh, and when I try to stop the backup process, I get a message "access denied" lately.  great.

I use the backup feature every day and I accept the fact that I've got five minutes a day that I can't use TB.
The only problem I've ever encountered with creating a backup was when I ran out of disk space, the process simply stops with an exception error and I needed task manager to end it.

If the process hangs on a folder, run folder maintenance for that folder.
Do you a lot of messages (drafts) in that outbox?

the outbox is completely empty

and what's even funnier, I've unticked the backup box now, and yet it still runs every day as it was set previously.

...as I was saying earlier, this feature is a complete mess. :(
