Erratic highlighting in HTML editor, highlighting light green doesn't properly close the style tag

I'm proofreading stories sent by friends and using the HTML editor to highlight typos and my comments. When I sel ect a word and highlight yellow, it highlights just that one word. When I highlight light green, it highlights fr om that word to the end of the message. What is wrong that's causing this?

I'm still using v4.2 because of problems Dad was mentioning in the V5 he's been using.

what's wrong with this forum editor? it added spaces in the middle of "sel ect" and "fr om" and won't let me change it (ignores the edits I make).

Here's the first pass of the replied mail with my intended highlights.
First edit and viewing the saved message to re-edit.

How do I add an image inline instead of a link? All I see is video insert instead. I tried [IMG][/IMG] tags but they don't work here (at least in preview).

Updating to v5 took care of that highlighting problem and I haven't had any of the (whatever) problems Dad was having with it.
