The Bat 4.0.14 does not start up anymore

Hi.

Not sure if this is the right place to post, but I need help and can not find any useful information online.

I am still using The Bat 4.0.14 - for many year without any problems whatsoever. This year, I already had the very unwelcome encounter with a complete loss of the content of my inbox folder, which I managed to fix, but I still do not know what happened there.

A few days ago now my computer froze when trying to open a webpage (while The Bat was running in the background), so I force-shut the computer down and started again. Since then I am unable to open The Bat - each time I clock on the icon, the usual pop-up window with the logo, version, registration etc appears, but then I get the message (in German, so I have to translate here), that "The Bat does not work anymore" - and after a few seconds ("looking for a solution"), the additional information that "The program can not properly run due to a problem. The program will now be closed and you will be notified by email, when a solution has been found".

This sounds all very cryptic to me, and I can also not find any reference to this error in any forum. Does anyone here have an idea what the problem might be and how to fix this?

Of couse, the easiest solution might be to simply buy the new version and re-install The Bat (which poses the question: Is the newest version backwards compatible with 4.0.14, i.e. can I still import by tbk backup file?).

Unfortunately, however, my last backup is two weeks old, which means I will loose all the messages I have send in the mean time (the ones I received are still on the server and therefore retrievable, I guess). Can somebody tell me how to find and possibly retrieve the latest messages, i.e. should there be a file somewhere on my computer?

Thanks heaps in advance for any helpful comments!

Cheers, Anja

Some additional information (I managed to locate the "The Bat" folder on my computer, just do not know what is what and therefore also not where to find my latest messages).

I found a file called ex_log.txt, which is full of error messages from the past few days, all of them reading

DCStorage:TFolderStorage:1 EOutOfMemory Out of memory

and

DCStorage:TFolderStorage:1 EAccessViolation Access violation at address xxxxx in module 'thebat.exe'. Read of address xxxxxx

The access violation message already appeared twice (but only with one mention) over the past three years, the out of memory messages in nowhere in the log since 2010.

Maybe this helps to find out what the problem is?

Ok I am no expert and until one gets on here you can try this
The crash message you are getting is from windows 7 (or  8  Correct?
If so you will find your data files here
C:\ProgramData\The Bat!

Have you cleaned up temp files recently? Too many temp files can mask as memory errors (as can low disk space)
If you are not sure how to do this get Ccleaner and run it (choose the FREE option with no support)
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

The next thing is to try it again. If it still fails, try going into the data directory and renaming TBUSER.DEF then restart the program. If that does it, all you have lost is your customized toolbars and shortcut keys

If THAT doesn't do it you may want to run regedit, navigate to this key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT
and get ready to reinstall, but don't go there until someone more knowledgeable comes onto the forum
