Remove old email address in drop down list in To: field

When typing an address in the To: field (or CC or BCC fields) a drop down list appears: in my case it has several old and very old addresses from years back which are definitely not in the address book.
How can these old addresses be removed? I think someone wrote here that you can use the down arrow to select it and then hit the DEL key.... but that doesn't work for me.
How can I get rid of them please someone, they are very irritating!

I tried to duplicate but without success.  All my drop down emails are in my address book someplace.

One thing you could check is the Addresses tab at the bottom of folder/account pane.  Are they in there?

Yes, I did find them in the addresses tab at the bottom of the folder pane. I highlighted the entry I did not want, pressed the DEL key and chose "remove all matching entries". That seem to do the trick. Thanks a lot, most grateful.
