From (email domain) - a suggestion for a column in message view

The message column -
From (email)
- is very nice and I use it.
(One of many TheBat! features that I did not have on Eudora.)

A possible additional column would be - From (email domain)

This would help in a number of forums wh ere there are multiple email addies, or wh ere you don't want to have to look around "info...".

Your thoughts?
Does Ritlabs read this?  Should I send it to them?

Thanks!

There's no guarantee that Ritlabs will read this, so you could suggest it to them by opening a support ticket.

I'm not sure if I understand the idea (or its purpose) correctly - do you really want to see just the sender's domain, like 'outlook.com' or 'gmail.com', instead of a full name or address?

Yes.
From and To.

To give an example, lets say I own a domain for a business.

That domain might have 10 different email addresses  I may want to see all of them at once in an inbox, without a cumbersome search.

Allowing a field that sorts on a domain would be nice.
And there are many senders who send to me from multiple emails.

I see! Thanks for the explanation.

If you need this regularly for one or just a few domains, and don't want to wait for Ritlabs to implement this, I'd recommend setting up a new filter tab underneath the message list. The default filters show you All, Flagged and Unread messages, but it should also allow you to make a tab that displays all messages from or to addresses that contain a certain domain name. It will take a few minutes to set up, but you can use and re-use it forever.

Yes, that could be a nice solution, although it might bean an extra mailbox. However, for an important domain that would work.

So if I end up with an inbox of 100 emails, and 20 are from mybiz.com, I would simply filter those 20 to a new mailbox right next door, like Inbox-Mybiz
This would be a filter that I would want at bottom, in "catch-all" land, after all the specific filters are done.

However, the column would still come in handy, lets say you have walmart.com and they have seven different senders, you would see them together even if the subjects are different, and even if they are in a conglomerized "Shopping" box.  So my idea remains an interesting suggestion for improvement that might be in the sweet spot of Ritlabs, since they are skilled in having lots of good columns.

That leads to another question.
One nice feature that Eudora has is that when you create a new filter, you can create a new mailbox at the same time.  I have not seen that here, although I may simply not know the technique.  Of course, for a few filters there is no big problem creating the mailboxes first, and then creating the filters. I just want to confirm .. no way to create a mailbox in the new filter process?  (And should that be an enhancement suggestion.?)

I share Daniel's concern on the purpose. And my inference is that development resources at Ritlabs are scarce. We're hoping for TLS1.2, which has been a standard for 10 years but still not in TB!, and with 1.3 recently approved, that may also be worth pursuing. But that's a decision for Ritlabs.

Per Daniel, I suggest you become more familiar with TB!'s filters. That your suggestion requires detail explanation is a hint that most people may not use it. A filter would address the issue of placing all from a domain together. Good luck in your pursuits.

Steven: No, what I suggested is not a regular mail sorting filter that might require an additional folder -- what I meant is a simple message list filter (like the All, Flagged and Unread filter tabs that are already shown below the list - you can add your own there) that would temporarily reduce the list to, for instance, senders from Walmart.com.

If you don't have too many domains of interest that you want to do this with, it's a convenient solution. However if you do have too many, there's another easy solution: Go to Workspace | Toolbars and turn Quick Search on. Whenever I want to see all messages from a certain company (domain), I simply type the name in the Quick Search box and press Enter. This removes all non-matching messages from the list (until I click on the 'All' tab below the list).

As to your question about regular filters: When you use the Create Filter dialog and you're asked to browse to the target folder, there's a "New" button there. So, no need to make the new directory in advance. When you work from the Sorting Office, you can enter a folder name and tag the 'create if necessary' option (or words to that effect).

Thanks, Daniel. Superb.

Thanks, David.  I think you miss my point on the idea of a new column or two that has the domain as the highest level sort From and To.

My undrestanding is that a filter would place them all together in a box (or in resource hog virtual boxes). Often this could be totally satisfactory. Yet often, that is not the goal.  It is to see all of one domain in a multi-use Inbox or pseudo-Inbox. To see those 25 emails from one or two sources together in a box that has 200 emails  Rather than their always being in 4 different spots.

And I understand that many of my questions are geek-detail.  And Daniel has been exceedingly helpful. Thanks!

And I understand that placing a new column on the Messages box may be low-priority for Ritlabs.  On the other hand, it does not require any change of coding or display concepts, so it might be far easier than other suggestions. And I'm not saying I will send anything in, however. :) Simply because most people would not use the column (although that might be true for many columns.)

You learn by asking.

Thanks, I plan to go over all this shortly.

The Quick Search sounds good, I will be trying it out.

And creating folders on the fly sounds good, thanks.

And I see the tabs under the message list, they start now with "ALL and INFORMATION"
When you set up a new Tab, under Filter - Use Quick Filtering -
                                                                   Use Advanced Filtering
.. the advanced filtering I think that is what you mean .. neat. .. that is really pretty powerful, configurable, sensible stuff!

Let me ask one questions -

==================

In Create Filter -  "for more options, hit the edit button.."
Edit has never done anything, it just drops away. What is it looking for to bring up more options?

==================

Thanks!

I use it all the time, it's great to have handy (they should turn it on by default i.m.o.)

Just don't ever press Esc while you're typing in the Quick Search box, or the whole box will disappear and you have to go into Workspace | Toolbars again to turn it back on.

Hmm, I don't know - I see All, Flagged and Unread. But maybe these tabs are also off by default.. to turn them on, go to 'Workspace | Folder Tabs | Show Folder Tabs'.

Once they're visible, you can right-click next to the existing tabs and pick 'Create a new tab'. Give the tab a name, e.g. 'Walmart', then on the Filter page of this dialog, set up an advanced filter for 'Sender Contains Walmart'. Close the dialog and fr om then on you can press the new tab to isolate all messages from Walmart.

Weird. I don't know.. when I press that button, it takes me to the Sorting Office of the current account, wh ere I can configure the filter (that I was working on) into more detail.

BTW, there is another quick and simple way of filtering the message list: When you press ALT down and click on a sender or on a subject in the list, the list will only display messages from that sender or about that subject. You have to press ESC to return to the normal view.
