The Bat 8.3 is duplicating folders and misbehaving, Duplicated Folders, re-starts on closure

I'm using TB 8.3 32-bit, which I've had for about three months.  It replaced an earlier version of TB (7.4, I think).  Initially, it behaved fine, but for the last couple of weeks it's been giving errors.  First thing I noticed was that my account structure had suddenly acquired an additional set of folders, so that I now have the usual inbox, outbox, sent mail, trash etc and then, underneath those, a duplicate set of inbox, outbox etc (there's no mail in any of these).  I've tried deleting these folders, both from within the Bat and via Windows File Explorer, but they just reconstitute themselves when I start TB up.  Along with this, I'm getting an error message when I try to exit from the Bat.  It says: 'Stream write error: "D:/MyMail/ACCOUNT.FLB"  Access is denied.'  (D:/MyMail is the correct path to my installation).  The file ACCOUNT.FLB does exist and I have set permissions on it to full control for everyone, to no effect.  If I continue trying to close the Bat by dismissing the message, it does close, but then automatically starts-up again.  I don't know if these two things are connected, or just co-incidental.  Be grateful for any help or advice anyone might have.

Have you tried excluding that file in your antivirus? It sounds like something is blocking access to it (I assume you have enough disk space, and you're not running a second copy of The Bat with the same mail folder).

Daniel, thanks for the prompt reply.  Unhappily, it hasn't worked.  This machine is running win 7 and the only AV it has is a copy of MSE.  I have excluded the entire Bat folder, to no avail.  there's only one copy of the Bat running, although it does handle two separate email accounts.  Both of these send/receive quite normally, but the other problems I originally mentioned persist.  I am toying with the idea of a re-install although loathe to do so as I have many mail rules and other customisations in place which, I guess, I would lose.  I've also had a problem in the past with TB not remembering/accepting my activation code after re-installation.

Do you get the error about D:\MyMail\ACCOUNT.FLB every time you exit The Bat? (btw, that's the file that stores the configuration of any common folders). If so, you could run the free Handle.exe utility (link) from SysInternals to see which process is blocking it. Also, are you sure it doesn't have its read-only flag set?

Thanks again, Daniel.  Handle just shows me that thebat32.exe has accessed the account.flb file - which is what I would expect.  I have tried deleting account.flb and allowing it to regenerate, but that didn't help either.  The file is not marked read-only.  I am coming to the conclusion that I may need to reinstall.  I don't want to backup my existing mail and then restore it into a fresh installation, because I think that would merely recreate the problem, so I am considering an export-import alternative. Not sure if I can restore message filters from a back-up.   If I do this, I'd also want to completely remove the Bat before reinstalling.  Is there a recommended procedure for doing this?  I thought about using Revo Uninstaller - good idea, or not?  I feel that the duplicate folder set I mentioned in my first post must be contributing to this situation in some way, but I don't seem to be able to get rid of those.  I try to delete them via 'Folder > Delete' but TB tells me it is an IMAP folder and can't be deleted.

I see! If those are IMAP folders, The Bat is recreating them because the IMAP server tells it to (apparently they have been set up on the IMAP server and The Bat must copy that structure locally). Maybe you can revise that structure on the IMAP server (through your provider's webmail), and then The Bat will stop trying to recreate them?

Message filters are stored in files (one per account) named account.srb, if I'm not mistaken (you can also copy them to the clipboard and paste them into a text editor to save them in text format).

I think I have found my issue.  I had a close look in the Bat's home folder (the one it calls 'Program Mail Directory').  In there, with a file creation date approx three weeks ago (when my problems started) was a folder just called 'IMAP'.  No idea how/why it got there, but I deleted it and all is now well.  Thank you, Daniel, for your efforts.
