editor question - the lines on the left from "reply"

One question is the single, double and triple lines on the left from replies.
As I am used to simply highlighting and delete (maybe backspace) to eliminate the blank lines.
(Similar for the text of earlier conversations.)

In MicroEd it seems a little more complicated.
And I end up trying to isolate the sections with the Enter key.

Is there a simple quick way to highlight and delete?

Thanks!

I admit I have no idea at all what you're asking about. Maybe if you upload a photo of this someone will be able to provide a useful response.

I definitely should have added - thin vertical lines along the left edge.

That you can get with REPLY and then another REPLY, etc.

Yes, I can place a photo in box.com with a url (do we have a more direct way here?)

What you are saying see to be the indent lines used for reply levels. Instead of an '>' there is the '|', '| |' in the reply template. you may wish the view the standard reply template and either edit or disable 'show reply' level.

Thanks. I may do that, disable the lines in the template.

I like the lines, conceptually.  Used to them from Eudora.

The problem is deletion of unneeded and blank lines is a bit of a chore. (Unlike Eudora.)

TheBat! seems to think of them as a group, so if you want to delete 10 lines out of 20, it wants to delete all 20.
Plus it becomes more difficult with more than one line.

Workarounds so far are cumbersome.

Well if you just wish to delete the '| ' '| | ' from the beginning of the line in a reply.
  • Start the reply
  • Menu: Edit | Block Type
  • Change to Column
  • Now move mouse pointer to the first line & column you wish to delete
  • cursor down
  • delete the column
Now the column will be selected and can be deleted at will. Depending on the 'auto wrap' or 'auto format' setting you may need to force a reformat.

hope this helps just a little bit.

Thanks!

I do not see any Block commands under edit, maybe that is a version 8 thing?

This page, which looks years old, gives hot-keys for various Block command.

Block and Formatting Commands
To mark a block of text, you can use the standard cursor keys, together with the <Shift> key. With the mouse you can select text by moving the mouse cursor while pressing the left mouse-button.
Action
Mark the beginning of a block
Key combination! Ctrl+K B
(and many more)

I may be missing the basics.

why does the editor add this url?http://www.artur.pl/hack/ritlabs.ii.pl/the_bat/hlp_eng.html

"Ctlr+K B" is a shortcut from the WordStar age (before WordPerfect, Word, etc) that survives in many editors including the one in The Bat.

However, when you check the status line at the bottom of the editor window, there are many icons that you can click on, including one just to the right of the Insert/Overwrite toggle. It lets you choose from three selection modes: Block, Line and Stream.

My status line icons include:

English (American)   HTML only - Auto S/MIME etc. and some icons (Encrypt and Sign on the right.)

I don't see one for Insert/Overwrite toggle or the Block and Formatting.

So I have to ask again .. what am I missing?
Is there some configuration setting?

Thanks!

It seems to me that you're wanting to delete content. The embedded characters that help delineate separate responses that people with whom you correspond rely on will not be there. I suggest you rethink your intent in your pursuit.

You said you were using MicroEd, but it sounds like you're editing in HTML format instead, which would also explain the vertical quote lines that you're seeing.

The HTML editor doesn't do block selections as far as I know. However, when you switch to "HTML/Plain Text" (Options | Message Format in the editor's menu, or using the switch in the editor's status bar), you should be able to remove parts of the quoted blocks. Afterwards, you can still switch back to "HTML Only" if I'm not mistaken.

Yes, that all sounds good. Thanks!

I didn't realize that MicroEd was simply plain text and that they don't have an RTF editor.
