v11 message list wider line spacing?

I bit the bullet and upgraded to v11 -- 11.4.1 to be specific -- from 10.5. I waited it out last year due to seeing the many complaints here.


I wish I had taken a screen shot first!

It appears to me that the message list now has much wider line spacing, resulting in fewer messages on screen. And maybe smaller font size too. How much of this is real, and how much is my imagination due to being alert for changes?

And is there any way to control this? I have a vague memory that maybe this issue came up in the past, but I'm not sure.

I think this is what you need: Options -> Preferences... -> Other options -> Use denser display of items for folder and message lists

Thanks, Miloš. I find I already have that option set. I'm sure I set it years ago. That's probably why I have that vague memory of having dealt with this in the past.

I tested. With "denser" set, I see 30 lines in the message list. Reset, 28 lines. That's not much difference, leading me to believe that the option is less effective in v11 than in v10.

The difference in the folder list is similar but perhaps a little greater. I am more concerned about the message list.

Support response is "At this point there is no way to revert back to older settings of lists display. We will forward your suggestion to the developers.".

Hmm, it's not clear whether this is a generic "leave us alone" response or if they really changed something. Honestly, I haven't noticed a difference between v10 and 11.

Font and font size can also have an impact, try playing around with that in Options -> Preferences... -> Message List. Maybe the updated version changed your previous settings to its defaults. I recall something like this happening to me once, between older versions.

I interpreted it as affirming that something changed but saying that there's no easy way to go back.

Playing with the font was a good idea. I was using Noto Sans 9. Changing it to Verdana 9 results in a significantly more compact message list with no reduction in legibility. Perhaps they changed how font metrics are used.

Unfortunately, AFAIK there's no control over the font in the folder list. Folders and accounts which I could previously see on screen are now only visible by scrolling.

Ah, thanks. I changed that to Verdana also, resulting in a significant improvement.

I still hope that Ritlabs will give us more control over the spacing. I'm sure that Bat users, on the average, have many more folders than, say, most webmail users.

Maybe you already use this, but here's a way to get a lot of vertical space for the account trees: Workspace -> Window Split Mode -> Full-height Account tree. On my 16 by 10 laptop screen it gives me 42 lines with my font settings. Nice round number :D

Anyway, no matter how many lines are squeezed in, it never seems to be enough. Making sub-folders is the way to go, and collapsing the more rarely used folders.

Somehow I missed this last response to my post.
I'm using Horizontal Split, which also provides a full height tree -- 43 lines on my setup. I'm really doing OK on the account tree now that I've changed the font. I'm more bothered by the appearance, which to my eyes is just weirdly open.

Yeah, I have a lot of subfolders. My setup could stand a lot of reorganizing, but it's not bad enough to be worth taking time from other things. Hey, I'm 76yo, if this lasts another 20 years then I won't be around to worry about it!
