Failed to create working directory, Problem during upgrade install

I am trying to upgrade to the new version and every time it goes through the install process and then says "Failed to create working directory c:(path to the bat)".  Of course I am upgrading so the Bat directory already exists.  I tried this again with older versions and the same problem happened. And now The Bat 10.5.4 (the version I was using before) does not start up at all!  Please let me know what to try!  thanks!  Greg
Windows 10.  Bitdefender--already tried disabling all the parts of it.  Using administrator mode.  Tried deleting the directory c:program files/the bat! and rebooting, and reinstalling, still gave same error message "failed to create working directory c:program files/the bat!" even though after failure I checked and it did create the directory and it has a few files in it.

Never saw this one. Try running a drive diagnostics tool, maybe something is corrupted. Windows has one built in: From File Explorer, right-click the C: drive -> Properties -> Tools tab -> Error checking.

It looks like you don't have administrator rights. Change your default folder for data inside TB! settings. Then install TB! to another non-C:\ folder.

George, I cannot launch TB anymore, how can I change the default folder for data inside TB settings?  also you mention a non C: drive, but I only have one drive which is C?  please let me know!

Milos, I tried the drive diagnostics tool, it found no errors.

George, I plugged in an external hard drive and tried to install The Bat there, but it still gives the same error message about failing to create a working directory on C

There are a couple of threads on this forum about the issue, it seems that the problem is that the folder with the account e-mail data (the "working directory") is somehow inaccessible. This may also prevent TB fr om (re)installing, since it tries to access the directory.

The information is stored in the registry under COMPUTER\HKEY_USERS\...\SOFTWARE\RIT\The Bat!, in the "Working Directory" field. Make sure it points to the right location. You may need to move it if it is somewhere on the C: drive wh ere Windows can restrict access (like C:\The Bat!). Move it to a different drive if you have one permanently configured, or somewhere in C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData. Then use regedit to update the "Working Directory" field.

And only then install TB again.

What about full reinstall?

Use it some translate service to read.

Yeah, resetting the registry values for TB using either of the two methods would probably work, too. The downside is that all registry settings would be reset, which would need to be dealt with separately.
