Rules applied to color groups is buggy, It seems that the color group names are not visualized properly after saving them in a filter for a virtual folder

Hello everyone!

New forum user here, have been using TheBat for more than 2 decades now  :D . Mainly happy with the application, so keep up the good work!

Unfortunately I spotted some time ago kind of a bug and because I want to use the feature color groups even more and more for the future, I want to share the issue and hope that I could receive some kind of feedback regarding it.

I am running Win11 with The Bat 9.5.1. For test purposes I tried the demo of 11.4.2.1 on a fresh installed VM with Win11 and it behaves the same.

I want to use color groups to mark the status of my job applications, it is kind of a lifecycle of the application. For now I have 5 of them:

30_To_Do / 31_Waiting / 32_Invitation / 33_Reject / 34_No_Reply

I have two IMAP accounts where job mails are incoming/outgoing and want to have a virtual folder over both IMAP accounts and their respective Inbox / Sent folders. Only mails having one of the 5 statuses named above should appear in the virtual folder.

The bug is, that whenever I try to set up those values as Filter for the virtual folder, TheBat is saving only some of the values on a random basis. The rest is listed as "default group" instead of "Reject", for example. The filter seems to be applied correct, at least on the first save. If I then go once again and try to double check the settings, then (on a random basis) after clicking OK TheBat is applying a filter based on the defaut color group, which leads to the case that the virtual folder is listing all messages instead of the "colorgrouped" ones. Below is a sceenshot for better understanding, I am using the German GUI.

The Sceenshots are here https://imgur.com/a/FLEMV5f

TLDR: It seems that the color group names are not visualized properly after saving them in a filter for a virtual folder.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

As fellow users, we can't solve bugs here. You may want to report the issue to the developers using the 'Support' menu near the top of this page. Good luck!

Thank you for your advice.

Indeed, I opened a ticket after writing the post here. My suggestion was, that someone could have faced identical problem in the past and could know some kind of workaround or a reason for this behavior, for example "color group name too long" or "dont use special characters in the group name".

I will keep you updated once I receive some feedback regarding the ticket.

I have faced with another bug and forget to send this to support: IMAP-box not stores color group for emails after some time. Needs to send them to POP3-box and only then they stores.

As a workaround you could consider using message tags instead of color groups.

I tried to use the tags instead of color groups. Unfortunately I can not find a way to let the message appear in different color like it it the case with color groups. The tag feature has its own color definition for the tag highlighting, but not for the message in the messages list. Any clue?

Tags will not color the messages, but you can add the Tags column to the message list. They are nice and colorful, easy to see, and you can then click on the Tags field in the message list to add/remove tags from a message (should be doable automatically with filters, too). Also, you can configure them to your heart's content in the preferences (add new ones, hide existing ones you don't need, etc.).

I do use it both of features in parallel. And can't use only tags.

Filters sorting messages into folders do the trick for me, never felt the need to use colors, except black, black and black. And I find tags immensely useful: ToDo, Done, URGENT... With virtual folders to collect them from all folders for easy viewing.

OTOH, I use them only with POP accounts, I don't know how well they interact with IMAP. Should work in theory...
