More IMAP questions, Folder options unclear

Spam in my primary Outlook account is getting worse and worse.  I'm now getting maybe 40 messages a day.  They are correctly directed to the "spm" folder.  The issue is that when they come in, the bat commences flight.  This is a huge distraction.  I'd like to not check the "spam" folder, except when I start TB.  To this end, I have unchecked both the "download during periodical checks" and "download on 'receive new mail' command" boxes.  Neither seem to do anything.  So, two questions:

What do those check boxes do?  I can't find any details in TB documentation.

How do I stop periodically checking for messages in the spam folder, and only in the spam folder?  I need to get my proper Outlook messages as they come in.

I know that IMAP is fraught.  I understand that often there aren't good options for problems.  But, perhaps someone know something that I don't.

Thanks much.

Addendum:  Folder is labeled "junk," not "spam."

And:  TB Home 11.3 64 bit

Thanks

I played around with IMAP settings on GMail and my company e-mail account (not Outlook-related) and these settings don't seem to do anything either. Messages are always immediately downloaded. Whether this is a TB bug or modern IMAP implementations don't support these functionalities, or my expectations are wrong, I don't know.

Here's a possible workaround to get the behavior you want, with only one additional step after everything is set up:
1. Create a new TB account for the same Outlook mailbox
2. On that TB account, subscribe only to the Spam folder (Account -> IMAP Commands -> Manage IMAP folders)
3. On the original TB account, unsubscribe from the Spam folder
4. After that, when starting TB both accounts should have their messages updated (make sure Account -> Properties -> Mail Management -> when The Bat! starts is selected)
5. Explicitly disconnect from the new account (right-click -> Disconnect from the server), and continue working with the original one

Note that, at least for me, explicitly disconnecting from the GMail IMAP server does not work when anything more than "Get only message headers" is selected in Account Properties -> Mail management -> IMAP Fine-Tune. The other account does not mind.
