Some initial questions, new to The Bat

In search of better email client I came across this programme. It looks very nice. I have just 3 initial questions

1) how to label emails if needed - can I set some personalised labels ?

2) how to set the text position when replying - I want it in the beginning, now it starts after the quoted text

3) where are filters and new filters settings ?

1) You can assign a colour group to a message, you can define as many colour groups as you like.

2) Text positioning is done with the %cursor macro in your reply template
(Account - properties -templates)

3) Account -> Sorting Office

Thank you very much. One more question - is there any way how to import emails from Thunderbird to Bat smoothly and reliably ? Thunderbird is unfortunately not mentioned in the import options ...

And also - is there any way how to customise the basic  keyboard shortcuts ?
I find ctrl(shift)+F5 etc. very uncomfortable and ctrl+enter (for reply) and ctrl+O for forward very illogical. The best shortcuts are used in Opera mail client - R for reply, F for forward. Any way to set it here too ?

Thunderbird uses 'Unix mailbox' and that's a supported format for import and export of messages.

Customizing shortcuts can be done via:
View -> Toolbars -> Customise ...
Play around with the possible features, you can do a lot there.

Wow ... that´s more than I expected ... These options look quite amazing ... Thank you for your tips and your patience (it is the very first day I play with the programme) and thank you in advance for possible more tips after I play with it more  ...

One more thing: I tried to import addresses from Thunderbird and Opera. No success...

1) Addresses from Thunderbird (in .txt format) bring completely deformed email addresses (with doubled or tripled names before @)

2) Opera is able to export only to some ...adr. file, which seem to be unreadable by Bat

If I can ask two more questions

1) I somehow cannot sort out how to make a "makro" for the usual type of reply (so many options there and I am not really a programming wizard)

I have one problem - I just tried to create a simple filter: moving messages that contain a given word in subject to the new selected folder (objednavky). I succesfully managed to do the same thing in Mozilla and Opera some time ago, but here it does not work yet. What did I do wrong ?

The first screenshot shows setting the filter, the second  shows how the filter does not work by not moving the messages to the selected folder and keeping them in the inbox

Your first screenshot show that all three words would have to be present in the subject line for the filter to work. I suspect you meant for any of the words to trip the filter. If this is the case, go back to edit the filter, click on the "AND" and you'll get a list of possible choices. Click on "OR" in the list. Then repeat for the second AND, and the filter should work.

I've been using TB for about a month now, having used Eudora for many years, and find that I can do much more with TB that I could with Eudora or Opera's M2.

Your question about creating your own macro involves a word meaning. If you want to create your own pre-built messages, check out the "Quick Templates" in the help file. TB uses the word "macro" to mean the special actions built into the program, and the QT capability does what other programs call user-defined macros.

Hope this helps some; we can learn the fine points of the program together!

Jim, thank you ... "OR" was really the point, now the filter works.
This programme looks really great ...

I still ponder about how to import addresses from Opera M2 or Thunderbird. And also how to make quicker access to the Colour Group, to label the message immediately. Creating a shortcut does not seem to work ...

BTW the "Quote" button does not seem to work here ...

If you are having trouble importing from thunderbird, let me highly reccomend the following

ABC Amber Thunderbird Converter v4.12
Yernar Shambayev (ProcessText Group)
processtext@processtext.com

They also have a conveterfor THE BAT! which I use extensively to archive messages. The author has made several changed that I found a need for within a day or 2 and to me that is impressive.

You can get the Thunderbird converter and have 30 days trial and can only export a few at a time
Here's the link and for the record my only relationship with them is that of a very satisfied customer

I tried that quick template, no success so far it seems ...
I just want nothing else that the usual behaviour: cursor in the beginning with a quote below: "on 1.1.2006 John Smith wrote: .............."

I made this template:

http://www.savita.me.cz/show/bat3.jpg

Specified this:

http://www.savita.me.cz/show/bat4.jpg

Yet, it does not work:

How to achieve this very simple thing which every other programme does automatically ? (also for forwarding)

Ivo, there are many templates levels, for account, folder, contact group and contact. Set this reply template in account or folder instead in Quick template, it is better.

btw you can check www.thebat.cz and subscribe to czech mailling list too.
