Installing TB Prof over TB 2.11.02

TB Prof does not get installed over TB 2.11.02 for me as was the case previously when I used to install a new version of TB. If I'm doing something basically wrong, could someone please enlighten me?

I let TB be installed in a folder called "the_bat" in Drive D following a fresh OS install. OS: Windows XP Prof. I have never encountered any probs while installing new versions of the "2" series of TB over the existing one. Now the scenario is pretty strange. I have installed TB 2.11.02 and when I try to install TB Prof 3.0 and 3.01 they never appear. The "Add / Remove Programs" tool in Control Panel shows TB Prof to have been installed and I uninstall it from there.

While installing TB Prof, I'm told that TB Prof will install components I choose, but there's only one available, the Help files, I think (I don't remember correctly). There's no indication that TB Prof's files have been installed in the same folder (D:\the_bat in my case) as TB 2.11.02.

My question is: Does TB Prof not install itself over previous versions of TB?

I hope one can do install it like I used to previously.

It should do that, but since Ritlabs has only recently begun to use .msi installs, it is possible they forgot something. There's been a lot of testing on the beta list, but I'm rather sure that nobody there was still using 2.11. ;-)
(With .msi installs you need to mention all versions you'd like to replace with the current one, so if you forget a file or a time stamp...)

When TB won't install over an older version, there can be several problems, one being that the .msi won't install from a windows account with limited rights, you need to have admin rights, that problem didn't occur with older installs.

When that isn't the problem, you'd better uninstall TB 2.11, without deleting the messagebase (the uninstall asks whether you want to delete that or not). As this will delete your registry settings for TB, you better save those settings with this commandline:
c:\windows\regedit.exe /e c:\thebat.reg HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT

Adjust the path settings to your preferences.

When installing TB 3.01 pro you don't run it, but at first you double click on the thebat.reg file, this will restore your previous regsitry settings.
I'm not sure whether it's the installation procedure or TB itself that propmts you for an account, but in case it's the installation procedure, just point it to your current mail directory and mention one of your current accounts and it'll take those settings.
When it is running TB itself that asks for your accounts, there's nothing wrong, because the location of your accounts is restored with the registry settings.

Thanks for the reassurance...I was beginning to imagine that I was actually doing something wrong.

And I haven't actually tried getting things done the way you have suggested, although I should keep them in mind when things go really wrong with TB Prof installation.

I tried doing things the other way around and it sure worked. I installed TB Prof first after uninstalling the earlier one. Then I installed TB 2.11.02 over that (I haven't yet got around to purchasing TB Prof, but hold a valid key for TB 2.11.02) and registered it. Then I installed TB 3.0.1.33 Prof over it again and it worked this time. One has to select 'Custom' installation to have TB recognise settings and mail accounts already in place. I'm not able to understand though as to why it does not work the other way around- from TB 2.11.02 to TB Prof 3.0 / 3.01. Maybe it's with me. And I do have administrator rights, so that couldn't probably be the reason.

Some doubts here. After selecting 'Custom' installation in TB Prof, I'm asked to select a few features offered by TB that I might require. But upon going through the details in the drop down box, I'm told that other than the 'Tip of The Day' files, no other features will be installed (there's a 'X' mark and text that clearly tells whether each will be installed or not). So are these features only for registered clients, which is not probable considering that anyone has to install TB Prof first and then register it and this flummoxing episode occurs before TB Prof is installed. The question is, why are they being offered if they are not going to be installed anyway? Again, maybe it's me who's missing something very elementary here, although I cannot understand what that could be. Not that I'm dying to have those "features" installed.

I'm not sure why that is. Maybe some of the pecularities of the .msi concept that the folks at Ritlabs haven't fully mastered yet. Until now I haven't run anything else than a full install/upgrade of the .msi.
When I find the time, I'll try to upgrade some other installs.
