"Connection to Host Broken"

"Connection to Host Broken", Can't Get E-mail

When The Bat! tries to get mail it almost immediately fails with a message like "Connection to Host Broken last command 'USER <user>". The email servers are up, I have a good Internet connection, and I can get my email with a different email program. Any ideas as to what may be happening? Thanks.
