Vista: Very slow start of the bat

I see the splash screen about 10 or 15 minutes before I can download the first mails. My bat version is 3.956/1.244 I would very appreciate if someone could give me a hint to solve this problem. Defragment the drive TB is / mail folder is. Mail folder on a network drive? Try also to exclude from real time virus protection TB folder / mail folder. Disable plugins.
