Message editor: How to extend a text selection?

I'm using the Plain Text (MicroEd) editor.

I have a paragraph like, for example,

Quote
Massa orci pretium Sed consectetuer tincidunt eget quis id Curabitur montes. Nulla eros facilisi eu lorem orci nibh eleifend neque nibh velit. Habitant Aenean augue dui sed.

Imagine I want to select the first three words. I place the cursor at the start of the paragraph in front of "Lorem", I press and hold the Shift key and click at "dolor". Now the first three words are selected.

Now if I want to extend this selection, in most editors (and in The Bat 1.62r) I would just press the Shift key again and click to where I want the new selection to end. However, the MicroEd editor used in TB! 3.98 starts a new selection and unselects the previously selected text. Is there any way to change this behavior?

It's working well with the other editor (Windows) but with this editor there's a different problem which I find even more annoying. With the MicroEd editor (and, again, The Bat! 1.62r) I could select a paragraph  and reformat it by selecting Format/Alignment/Left from the menu or by using the Alt+c shortcut. This does not work with the Windows editor.

I don't mind which editor I'm using, I just want one that allows me to quickly reformat text with the Format/Alignment/Left command and that doesn't take away the text selection mode I'm used to from earlier TB! versions and most (if not all) text processing applications.

Any help is highly appreciated.

I agree: the selection behavior in MicroEd is quirky and annoying. Maybe there's a logic to it, but it escapes me.
