Non functional restore, The restore function does not work

I am running The Bat! Professional 3.98.4 on Windows XP Pro SP II English and I am having serious problems.

My computer needed a reinstallation of all applications why I first decided to make a back up of The Bat. It resulted in a four (4) GB large .tbk-file.

Then I formatted my hard drive and reinstalled everything including The Bat!
When I decided to make the restore it took about 0.1 second and all that happened was that the accounts were created, but not with any of the sub folders I created earlier or any settings at all. Not a single e-mail was restored, not a single pop-server or smtp-server.
Everything is missing!!! (Except for the names of the accounts).

So, I decided to delete The Bat!
I did so and restarted the computer after deleting the folder from Program Files-folder.
I made a new installation and now everything came up just as it looked after the last restore - only account names - nothing else.

Once again I uninstalled The Bat!
Cleaned the Registry for all findings of "Bat", "TheBat", "Ritlabs" and "rit".
Deleted the folder The Bat from Program Files folder and restarted the computer.

I made a new installation and the program asked me if I wanted to use the account names. How was that possible? I had deleted everything that had to do with The Bat - except for the back up files that now was moved to another place on another hard drive.

Well, I said no to all accounts and the program came up nice and smooth as always.
A new try to restore failed. Only the account names came up, but nothing in the folders. Not a single e-mail, not a single pop3- or smtp-server.

Please I need your help because I am not interested in doing adjustments to the more than 60 accounts that I am monitoring.

I just want to do the restore and make it work like it says in the help-files. I want all settings, severs and e-mail to come back.

If I am not wrong I have worked with The Bat! since 1997 and it has worked well, but now I am not that very happy.

Kind and best regards,

I don't know why your backup didn't restore properly, TB is reputed to have prolems with single mail folder larger then 2 GB, so it's possible that the file size of your .tbk was too much for it, but that's just guessing on my part.

I guess that TB asked you after re-installing whether to use the previous accounts is because you didn't delete the account folders.

Do you still have your original accounts on disk or are they lost by a format of your hard disk. If they're still present you can use those files to point TB to them and everything will work.

To delete everything TB related from the registry you can delete this registry tree and you're done:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT\The Bat!

have you checked all the boxes in the restore dialog?

Remember what was the path to your mail folder on the old system and create a folder with the same path/name first, then restore.

To avoid such problems I make backups by just Rar -ing the whole mail folder - more simple, more reliable, faster, better compression, you can exclude folders not modified since last backup.

BTW was it exactly 4GB or somewhere about 4GB?

Right now my computer is on service due to a problem with the mother board, but I'll try to answer your questions.

As I can remember no single mail folder is larger than 2 GB. I have about 60 accounts that I monitor and one or two are very large, but not near 2 GB.

I uninstalled TB and and also cleaned the registry. Anyway I was asked to check all accounts as they, for some reason, still was registered somewhere in the computer. I have made several installations and uninstallations to try to find a solution, but none worked.

I have my system and all program files on C, but TB is located on D inclusive all folders. So, I haven't lost anything. Right now my settings are to save all on the mail server, so when I get things to work I will still have all mail saved.

What I don't want to do is to start pointing files from every account to a special file on the computer. That is why I tried to do the Backup. Now it looks like this is what I have to do anyway...

It would be so easy if I only had to to an export of the working TB configuration from the Registry. However, I do have the old Registry saved on another hard drive, so if anyone knows how to do an extract from a Registry that is not in the Windows folder; please let me know.

It does not have any meaning if I check all the boxes (account) when I try to restore. I have tried all versions and they were not many.
All that happens is that the accounts appear in TB, but without any messages, sub folders, settings etc.

What I can do is like you suggested to have all the accounts appear again and then do the restore. Maybe that will work.

The TB-file is 3,6 GB something.

As you've still got your old accounts on disk, try this:

Install TB
Restore your backup
Close TB
Start Regedit
Change this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT\The Bat!\Working Directory
to the path wher your old accounts are to be found
Close Regedit
Start TB
See whether this helped

You might, just in case something goes awry,
make a copy of your old message base first.
