Backup failed

I tried to do a backup and it ran ok for a while but then when it came to a certain directory it failed. Repair failed at that point also, and now when I run TheBat! it freezes.
I've decided that my HD is failing which may be the problem.

When I get my new computer, is there anyway I can restore my old mail files? Will restore work up to the point where backup failed?
I have a recent and an older complete copy of the Mail folder, is there anything I can do with that?
And yes, I should have been archiving regularly. It just takes so long!

Thanks
Doug

having a copy of the mail folder is pretty much enough as everything important is inside - messages, filters, adr. book etc. In fact I always make backups this way, by just Rar-ing the mail folder - a fast, simple and bulletproof method, IMO far better than the built-in backup tool.

When you get the new PC, install TB, close it, then put the files you have in your backed up mail folder in the new mail folder, and start TB. That's all, no need to use backups created with the built-in tool.

Using WinRAR, WinZip etc would be a better option than the internal backup. Found out the hard way - the internal backup WILL NOT restore any IMAP accounts properly.

This is something that should have been found in testing. Do not know when or if it ever worked.

Disabled the internal backup and using Rar/Zip to make it happen.

May be in the minority with use of IMAP, but this is just another item to think about.

What's going wrong with restoring an imap account? And with what version did you encounter that problem?

I'm just a user of The Bat! I don't work for Ritlabs.

Version 3.99.x (latest one) on WinXP Pro.
When I restore from a .tbk (generated from within application), the IMAP account will be 'created' but it is set for POP3 in the properties page. Since it is an IMAP SSL connection - no joy.

I have all options checked in the internal backup: common files/folders, pop3 account and imap account. There are three checkboxes found at the top of the dialog - all checked.

Deleting the IMAP account and recreate by hand is the only way I have been able to make it work.

I use a daily tape backup of my mail store (just over 2GB) I have pretty well given up on the internal backup. Faster to use tape for me.

Give it a try - setup an IMAP account (Fastmail.fm is where I have the IMAP account), place a few emails there. Backup via internal tool all your accounts. Rename the data directory (TheBat_old sounds good). Now restore all accounts. Never worked properly for IMAP accounts since 3.65 which was my first version.

Good luck. Hope there is something wrong at my end...

WinRar works in recreating everything properly, same as StuffIT (win version), WinZip 9, and IZArc.

Of course Image for Windows
ImageForWindows

Or Acronis True Image
Acronis True Image Home

Work and allow for extracting just the directories you wish to restore.
