Mail Chat - How?

I cannot work out how to use Mail Chat.

I have a colleague trying to use Mail Chat with me but I never see any replies in the Mail Chat window. Instead, he says that he receives an e-mail in his inbox each time I send a chat message.

I have been unable to find any information about this, so I am hoping that somebody on this forum could explain it to me.

TheBat! help doesn't say much about how mail chat works or what settings might be necessary in the main or account preferences. How is mail chat any different than regular email (which I manually check, not automatically)?
