how to "delete and close", delete the current message and close message window

with a message window open, how do I delete the current message and have the window close?

Right now when I click on the delete button, a new message opens up in the window (read or unread, it doesn't matter).

(Also, the delete and next or previous buttons - don't really work as I would expect.  I can't figure out what direction next is or previous, and sometimes it jumps a few messages.)

Does anyone else notice this behavior?  Or, am I the only one?  I don't see the need for the "delete and next" or "delete and previous" IF the delete button moves you along to the next message anyway.  I would have thought that the delete button would delete the message and close the window.  (this is from within a message window)

Any help would be appreciated!  thanks!

Actually you're mistaken.
What you consider a 'view message window' is a 'view folder window', so therefore deleting the message will bring you to the next message.

The next message will be defined by the sorting order you defined for that folder. You can see what to expect as the next message by enabling the 'show message list' option in the view folder window. It can be set via the menu of that window:
View -> Show message list

Off hand I can't say whether there is a 'delete and proceed to the next unread message' function within TB. However that might work when you access your new mail via the Mail Ticker.

This is considered a "view folder window?"

The window I'm talking about is when you double click on a message (basically from your inbox where all your new messages are), and a new window pops up and you are now reading the note that someone sent you.  For me I am now Viewing a Messsage.  So I would refer to it as a "message window."

Up on the button toolbar, from inside the "message window,"  I can choose to forward the message, reply to the message, etc.  There is also a button to delete the message that is currently open. And, two buttons on the side "delete and previous" and "delete and next."

What is suppose to be the NORMAL behavior for the delete button?

I am used to using Eudora, and this button would delete my message and close it (because it's gone now).  Somewhere in Eudora, there is a setting where you can toggle it to "delete and next unread message".  This is what I would expect from "delete and next" --delete and on to next UNread message.

TB! deletes the message and opens the next email whether it has been read or not.  Is this normal behavior?

p.s. I'm not saying Eudora's way is better, I'm just using as example. I like Eudora, but it is no longer supported, and now I am trying TB! and trying to learn!

Thank you for your time,

Okay. It's a "View Folder" window.  But, I am actually reading an email.

Is there a way to delete the current email and have the "View Folder" window close?

This is the action I would like.  Is there a way to have TB! do that??

Thanks! :D

No, AFAIK there isn't a way to do what you want.

But I don't understand why you bother to double click on a message to read it. It's exactly the same view as the preview screen. And when you read it there you don't have to worry about windows you want to close.

IF you are viewing the message list with a message open - no. but if you close the list (control-shift-L) then the delete button or just hitting the delete key will delete the message and close the window. At this point you can choose to use the delete and follow next or delete and follow last icons on the toolbar

This is working as designed. If you open the message list again you may want to work with several messages without the window closing each time.

Roelof Otten!
Oops sorry Roelof - we must have hit the reply button at the same time

Okay.

The reason I double click to read a message is because I like to have the view larger. I don't want to have to scroll too much in the message.  To make the preview screen larger, then my message list is such that I have to scroll through that.

I like doing this way.

If I can't delete and close, then I can't.  There's lots of other really nice features that TB! does. I am trying to fully explore as much as I can.

Thanks for your responses and help...very appreciated.
