Hi,

I am new to using The Bat! and like the program but am having difficulty in carrying out a few functions that were very simple with my last e-mail program.  I want to digitally sign and sometimes encrypt e-mails I am sending.  I have purchased a Digital ID from Verisign, and have used this successfully with another e-mail program, but unfortunately cannot get this to work with The Bat!

I successfuly installed the certificate from the CA's website.  When I go to ->Account ->Properties ->General ->Edit Personal Certificates, and right there on the "Personal" tab I can see the certificate, it is in date and checks out as OK.

Under ->Account ->Properties ->Options, both "Sign when completed" and "Enable S/MIME" are checked.  However when I compose a messgae to send it I can not send it because I receive the following error:

"Cannot sign message

Cannot find the certificate and private key for decryption"

I have to got to the Privacy menu and uncheck either Sign when completed" or "Enable S/MIME" in order to send the message.  Can someone inform me if I should be trying to sign messages another way?  Or if I am doing somethiong wrong with this method?

do You have certificate of Certificate Authority stored in Address Book "Trusted Root CA" or You have imported this certificate to account properties? You must add Your personal certificate, not certificate from website.

Hi Marek,

I actually downloaded my personal certificate from the Verisign website after I entered the challenge phrase etc.  I did not download the CA's certificate and try to install it as a personal certificate.

Just checking my Address books, I only have "Certum CA Directory" and "Netcenter Member Directory" as address books besides my own personal address book.

As regarding importing certificates, even if I can already see them when I enter "Edit personal certificates", do I still have to import them?  How do I know what to import, how to name them, or where they should be stored?

if You have Internal S/MIME implementation selected, Yoou must have own personal certificate in Account properties and CA's certificate in "Trusted Root CA" Address Book.

If You select Microsoft CryptoAPI S/MIME implementation, import both certificates to Microsoft's certificate storage, for example via Internet explorer.

Strangely, without my making any changes, this started to work a few days ago.  The only difference between the way The Bat! makes use of my certificate, and Outlook Express, is that The Bat! does not prompt me for the password to use my certificate like Outlook Express does, which is what is supposed to happen because I have the security level on my certificate set for that.
