sort threads (not their contents) by last received message?, a question

I am almost sold out to TB, however after playing around with it for a couple of hours I haven't been able to do this:

I have my messages grouped by Subject and sorted by 'created' date. This works great except for the fact that only the messages inside the threads get sorted in the order they were received. The threads themselves are stuck at being sorted by the order the first message in the thread was received.

Is it possible to set the view so the threads with new emails get bumped to the top of the list?

Try sorting by REFERENCE. BTW that is the way it is supposed to work: the threads will get bumped to the top if a reply comes in

What you suggested didn't work too well, It caused an indent hell and didn't look like the were getting sorted right either. However I found the solution:

In the main application preferences dialog, under the Message List section I enabled the 'Show Subject/From/To groups as messages, starting with' option, and set it to 'The newest message in the group'. Now the threads behave like messages, it's a bit buggy though.

Right now I have a 2 days ago message set as the 'newest' of the thread, although that particular thread has like 20 new messages since then. I even disabled the 'display time only' for today's messages option, no go.

I guess I'll stick to thunderbird for the time being, proper thread support is probably the most important feature to me and while TB exceeds in most areas, threads seems to be its weak spot.

Thanks for your help guys.
