Hello,

I use The Bat with Imap (gmail). I have a question concerning how mails are or are not saved locally on my PC.

Concerning the sent files perhaps they are stored on the HD. If I go to the files explorer I can see a "sent" folder with the two classic files I had while using Pop3 in the past: message.tbb (80 megs) + message.tbi

So I suppose that they are saved on the HD, isn't it?
I also have an Outbox folder, a junk folder and a trash folder.

But despite POP3, there is no Inbox folder for incoming mails. Everything seems to be stored at the root of the account. And here there are some strange things. I can see very large and regularly updated files:

- 17533B99.BK1 630 megs!
- part0003.bin 610 megs!
- 22E38D5D.TBB 520 megs!
- 17533B99.BK0 260 megs
- part0002.bin 230 megs
- 2AD321E8.TBB 120 megs
- etc etc

I have more than 2.5 gigas of data for my incoming mails with IMAP and mails are even not saved on my hard disk?

There is something wrong I suppose.

The messages aren't stored locally.
However, every message you want to read has to be downloaded. In order to prevent that you need to download a message twice when you want to read it twice, it's cached locally.
That cache is synchronized with your server, so when a message is deleted from your server, it will be deleted from your cache too.

I better undestand. But the size of my cache is huge: more than 2.5 giga

Much more than the size of my mails that are stored on gmail server (I only use less than 10% of their capacity: more or less 700 megs).

Is it normal that 700 megs of mail generate 2.5 giga of cache?

And what will happen when I will reach gmail capacity? My old mails will be lost?

I'm not into imap myself, so I can't comment on the size of the buffer files. And neither can I tell you what command would be best to compress the local cache. You could try a purge and compress, but I don't know whether that has any effect on the cacjhe size.
Нs there per chance an imap command like 'clear cache' or something like that?

What happens when your gmail account reaches it maximum volume depends a bit on gmail, traditionally full mailboxes refuse new mail, but some can be configured to delete the old stuff. You'd better check what gmail offers as options. One thing is sure, when gmail deletes soething it'll disappear from your local cache too.
