etc. i'm not using firewall or antivirus software.

Let's see what's happening, you can do this by enabling protocol logging. From the menu select:
Account -> Properties -> Transport
transport has a submenu called Protocol Logging, but you have to expand the menu to see that
-> protocol Logging -> retrieval protocol -> Enable Logging
You can select the target file fore the log.

Now try to collect mail.
Open the pop.log and paste the contents in your message on the forum. Note that your passwords and the contents of any retrieved messages are also mentioned in the log, so be a bit careful what you place on the forum.

>2008-12-08, 23:21:49: FETCH - Owner: Google Inc., pop.gmail.com.
>2008-12-08, 23:21:49: FETCH - This certificate is self-issued.
2008-12-08, 23:21:49: FETCH - TLS handshake complete
2008-12-08, 23:21:49: FETCH - connected to POP3 server
!2008-12-08, 23:21:49: FETCH - Server reports error. The response is: -ERR bad command 12pf925361muq.10

I've found it!
The "authentication" in Transport Settings should be changed to "Regular".
Now it works.
