Backup - does NOT overwrite old Backup

Hey there

I have set my Bat! (v. 4.0.18) to backup every single day.
It does the backup at the time I have setup, but the destination file (which should be overwritin by the new backup), does not change at all.

Why doesnt it overwrite the existing file - the auto backup doesn't help that much, if u have to do it manually and furhtermore check that the file is updated.

Anyone know what could be wrong here ??

Thnaks

no one has a comment on this "bug" ?

Hello,

I have the same problem. Unless I am sitting there at the time of the scheduled backup and instruct the pop up to yes indeed overwrite the existing file no backup is done. This is not auto where I come from.

The Bat! v. 4.1.11

Thank you,
Mike

not overwriting an existing file is a normal behavior IMO, surely better than overwriting without prompt.
You can schedule a .bat file to run prior to backup.
This file can delete the existing backup. Or better rename it, so that in case something goes wrong you still keep the most recent good copy.

Hello,

The quoted text below comes straight from The Bat! help file referring to auto backup.

Note: You can streamline the process by entering a file name in the dialogue's Backup file line, i.e. to overwrite an existing file.

Thank you,
Mike

then it's a bug, either in the program or in the help :)
Anyway, what I suggested should result in want you want - one or two most recent backups.

Well, it would be nice to have more options, in the backup proces.

Like overwrite existing backup, make new backupfile with another _1 _2 _3 extensens.

Anyway, Its not reliable at this point.

Hello,

I was able to get it to work. Although the way I did it may cause me to have other problems with The Bat! that I am not aware of yet. I'm using TB! on WinXP x64 so my default mail directory is My Documents\The Bat!\. I think that is the default directory for auto backup file (autobackup.tbk) storage also. I opened the Options>Preferences>System menu then clicked on the Advanced button and put D:\My Documents\The Bat!\autobackup.tbk in the "To backup file (standard)" field. I closed TB! reopened it and returned to the Options>Preferences>System menu and scheduled an auto backup to occur two minutes later. Two minutes later TB! created a backup. I scheduled another backup to occur in two minutes. TB! made the backup overwriting the previous one without requiring any permission from me. I did this several times to make sure it worked, it did. However I don't want my backup and original saved in the same directory or even on the same physical drive. I changed the backup location to F:\autobackup.tbk, this is where I was trying to make it work to begin with, and scheduled a backup. I checked F:\ and found no backup. I looked in the default location and found the newly created backup. I won't go into detail as to what I did next because as I said earlier it might cause more harm than good but it involves using a hex editor to alter one of the .CFG files. At the moment though I am getting auto backups in F:\autobackup.tbk which are overwritten without any input from me.

Thank You,
Mike
