TLS handshake failure

My Gmail POP3 account worked well for some time. But it stopped working and I get the following messages:

"TLS handshake failure. Invalid server certificate (This certificate is not yet valid)."

in the status bar at the bottom.

Why is this happening and how can I solve it?
