MSGTAG

I would be grateful if any user of TheBat! can show me how to configure it to work with MSGTAG. I have searched high and low and could not find any infos.

that's a quite strange app
As I understand, on the sending side it's sort of smtp proxy. You have to move your theBat smtp settings to MSGTAG, and then make theBat use the localhost MSGTAG smtp instead of the real one. The message passes through MSGTAG which inserts a tracking tag in it, and then is send from MSGTAG to the actual smtp.
That should be simple to set up, but if you can't with theBat, configure it for OutlookExpress and send a couple of messages - then on the receiving side, examine the source of these messages to see what MSGTAG actually inserts in them - you may be able to insert the same info directly in outgoing messages.

The tracking tag is actually a web hosted image which the receiving client tries to fetch, thus confirming message opening.
As this technique is widely used by spammers, it will surely not work everywhere. TheBat by default will not fetch it, nor Outlook - so if a tagged message is read on theBat or Outlook client , you'll not be notified in most cases I guess. The same should apply to the recent versions of most other clients. Add here firewalls that will block fetching and other stuff, and reliability of this scheme goes down to zero.
What's worse is that your account may get blocked for spamming, or even worse - your smtp may appear in spam blacklists, although you don't have any intensions to spam.
So I wouldn't use such app.

Thanks for the reply.
Your second part of the reply would explain why I did not get notified in a few instances when I was using Thunderbird.

Thanks to bigg one I have finally managed to configure The Bat! for use with MSGTAG.
You have to do this for each email account.
Funnily enough I have found that TheBat! still fetches the tracking tag. Maybe I have done something wrong.  :D

Glad to here it worked.
About fetching - could be, I actually don't use the latest version except for testing purposes with some non-important accounts.
Still use v3.85, and now found one more reason not to upgrade. However it should be possible to configure it not to fetch such stuff, I'm really amazed that's not the default.

I have been using MSGTAG for some considerable time now and have had it working on many email programs including TB. As was said you need to configure each email address you wish it to work on with the bat. Eudora and others self configure. My only problem with it is the fact that it has the same tag on all emails. would have been nice if it could be used with a different message for each account. BTW you can also use it for adding a footer to your emails which includes your details if you want. :D

I wonder if the above instructions for Use of MSGTag with The BAt are still valid for the newest version?

I can't get it to work at all!  I've tried localhost and 127.0.0.1 as my server and both fail :(

Thanks for any help.
