TB!4 and Kaspersky10 on Win 7, Is there any hope of getting this to work?

Hi Batters -

Last summer I loaded a Win7 beta system on my (new) 64bit Dell inspiron laptop, and TBv4x (new file system) ran on it like a champ until it picked up an ugly trojan, and I had to reload the system. At that point, to make a long story short, I resorted to a different mail client, until I could be reasonably certain that my system was clean. I bought a Kaspersky internet package, which ran fine and found some problems in TB's dbs, I deleted those, but for various reasons I didn't get TB reloaded.

There have been a couple of upgrades to TB since then, but I recently got a 'real' license for Win 7 and loaded it, reinstalled Kaspersky Internet 10, and dl'ed the latest version of TB and tried to install it.

It's not going well. I can't retrieve anything from my backups, including my AB, the program itself returned all kinds of access errors, and is still claiming a threadlist leak in module 'thebat.exe at 006F478', with a long list of caller addresses.

It is denying access to ADDRBOOK.INI, when I try to import the AB, which has me totally baffled.

I did eventually get it to talk to my comcast account, (you may gauge my confidence level here by the fact that I told it to just leave the messages on the server) but when I tried to configure a virus plugin I was sent home to RitLabs, for a link to the kaspersky plugin. I have searched every way I can think of, but I'm not finding anything but old messages about kaspersky v4-5.

I would very much like to recover what I can of my old accounts and also my AB, but I've more or less given up on that. I'll continue trying, if someone can point me at the current kaspersky plugin. I can't face the prospect of using Thunderbird for even one more day after three months of it, nor the webmailers, and I may have a nervous breakdown if I have to resort to Outlook.

I'm on my knees.

What kind of backup are you trying to restore? A old copy of your mail directory or one of TB's internal backups?
In the first case you might have run into problems with access rights, in the second case I've got no immediate idea about the cause of the problems.

What version are you trying to install?

The Ritlabs site offers no anti virus plugin for Kaspersky and AFAIK Ritlabs official point of view is that plugins are the responsibility of the anti virus vendor.

It shouldn't be really necessary to use a plugin, Kaspersky can scan incoming mails just fine and even if t doesn't find a virus on the incoming mail, TB isn't able to run attachments just by itself, so any attached virus can never be run without you doing the running, that takes more than simply viewing the message that has the attachment with it.
And opening an infected attachment will definitely trigger Kaspersky, plugin or no plugin.

When containing infected messages, restoring an old message base might cause problems as Kaspersky can scan the message base, but is only able to point at the message base for the folder that contains the virus and not the actual message, so you wouldn't be able to access that folder.
That might cause some of the problems you were experiencing. (Not the addrbook.ini problem though.)

And sorry for answering in two posts, but my wireless keyboard ran out of batteries.

've tried both ways to restore, to access the old db, and also to restore the TBv4 backup, which I made with the first v4 release I dl'ed. I don't recall exactly what it's version was, but it was probably the first public release; I don't generally wait too long to upgrade. I am somewhat neurotic about my email, and losing this is upsetting. Some of it dates back to the mid 90s :-/

The folders which contained the problems have been deleted. I don't expect to be able to recover anything from those, but I have about seven accounts, which were all heavily customized with numerous folders and filters. And they were old; I have been using TB for a long time now :-/ I may try to recover the AB at least from an older archive - I hadn't thought of that before, but perhaps that might work. It would be something. I won't get a chance to do that til tonight as I'm working today, but I'll give it a try.

I did get version 4.2.23 installed; the problems seem now to be the two error messages on closing. That is, the ADDRBOOK.INI error, and the threadlist leak. I have jpg screen caps of both if you think it's worth looking at them. The problem with Kaspersky seems to have resolved itself - when I loaded it just now to check the version, I saw a .kav plugin message flash by. I have no idea how it found it, I couldn't find it at all manually and the search utility failed to turn it up. I do have reservations about this search utility in Win7 :-(

I will keep working on it, and hope I strike gold somewhere. I will hope you have an AHA! moment on the error messages, though, and check back with you on that. Worst case they are an irritant I can live with, though the threadlist error is worrying; if I can't fix it, is it a risk to my data?

Thank you for responding so quickly. No need to apologize for splitting the post. Though I don't feel entirely confident, I will keep it going and hope for the best.

TB really has spoiled me for any other mailer :-)

If your old message base and backup is goesback to v 4.0 then you need to install v4.0 firstwhen restoring everyting and afterwards do the upgrade to the current public release.
Backups from v4.0 don't work with v4.1 and up.
That might be a problem.

If a Kaspersky plugin is present and installed then you can trace it's location via:
Options -> Preferences -> Virus/trojan Alert -> Anti-Virus
An automatic installation isn't odd, the AVG plugin gets installed automatically too.

OK. What I have is a backup I made with an early version of 4, but I also have the uncompressed dbs (folders and files) intact on the drive, except for the folders which were flagged infected. I upgraded at least once after I went to v4.

The Kaspersky plugin shows at the correct location, but when I mark spam it says there is no trainable spam utility - kaspersky has no plugin at the spam level. It says it wants to train spam, but may be looking for Outlook. In any case, that is their issue, not yours I suspect. The virus plugin looks OK. I think it showed up after I rebooted the machine, it wasn't there after I restarted TB!.

I suspect that this version is picking up some of the config from that install, and perhaps that accounts for the error messages (threadlist leak and no access to the AB.ini file) which pop up as it closes. It will not close until those messages are acknowledged, so it would be nice to get rid of them.

It sounds like I need to comb the configuration files and see if they are pointing to the wrong places, though I really don't have any clue as to that threadlist leak message, or how to get rid of it. The only other thing which seems to be broken is the 'quote highlighted parts of messages on reply', F4. I can't get it to quote anything in reply messages.

I really don't want to lose any more mail. If you can make any suggestions (as in how do I keep the current message db as well as what I can recover if I revert back to v4), I'd really appreciate it. It really is in an awful mess.

Thanks for doing this. I will keep at it; going back to something different is not an option.

PS - I have been having some problems getting these messages posted to you. I log in, the system accepts me, I write the message, but when I hit the sent button it tells me:  "Insufficient permissions to create messages in this topic. The CAPTCHA code is incorrect.."

However, I have seen to CAPTCHA codes, even when I have posted successfully. Do you know what is wrong here, assuming I can get this to post?
