HKEY Access Error Trying to Upgrade to 4.2.23, HKEY Access Error Trying to Upgrade to 4.2.23

Trying to upgrade from The Bat! v4.0.38 Professional Edition to v4.2.23 Professional I get the following error:

Error 1402 could not open key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\classes\TBVARS\shell\open\DDEexec\Topic
Verify that you have sufficient access to that key or contact your support personnel.

After clicking OK on this error the install exits.

I am running winxp sp3 and am the only user on the PC and am running as admin.

I am now left without the old installation and no new installation.

I Googled it for you

It is strongly recommended that you completely back-up your computer or at least the registry before taking this action.

Windows XP

1. Select "Start", "Run", and type "RegEdt32". Click OK.
2. Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
3. In the menu, select "Edit", "Permissions". A dialog will come up.
4. Check "Allow" for "Read" and for "Full Control", then click OK
5. Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and repeat steps 3, 4 for the keys "Software" and "System"
6. Expand the "Software" key, and repeat steps 3, 4 for "Classes"
7. Expand the "Classes" key, and repeat steps 3, 4 for "Installer"
8. If you have made any changes in steps 1 through 7, skip to step 10. If you did not make any changes, continue with step 9.

9.Open the "Classes" key, and click on "Installer" . In the menu, click "Security", "Permissions." Click the button marked "Advanced." Check "Reset Permissions on all child objects.", then click OK

10. Close the registry editor
11. Reboot the computer

Thanks for that.

I too had Googled and found multiple variations of the solution including the Roxio one that you quote.

I decided that before more fiddling around with the registry I would try for some more specific advice and was hoping that someone may have had the same problem with The Bat.  I think that the precise problem/solution may also be dependant on specific machine setup.

Based on the general principle of the Googled solutions, in the end I used regedit on ...TBVARS > premissions > advanced > ticked "replace permission entries on all child objects...."  and restarted.  Install then went like a dream and all is sweetness and light.

Sweetness and light is good  ;)
I'm glad that worked for you
Thanks for posting the fix back here for others who may have the same issue  :)
