Basic Features not implemented or not working properly

I downloaded the eval version of the Bat and I'm deeply impressed by its filtering features and its overall "light-weight" (i.e. performance optimized) look and feel. However, I was also surprised to see some basic features missing or not being implemented properly. I really would like to purchase this program, but there are two major things that keep me fr om doing so:

A) Play a sound when an email is incoming

Wow... I don't think that there's another email client in 2014 that does not play a sound for an incoming email. I've searched everywhere in the preferences... then googled it and found this:
https://www.ritlabs.com/en/forums/forum4/topic11505/

So, it appears as if you can only have a sound effect for incoming mail, when you use a POP3 mail account. It is NOT available for IMAP email accounts. I was REALLY surprised to find out about that. :(

B) "Mark as Read"/unread mails not synced correctly

This is another thing I find hard to believe... and it appears to be a major bug to me. I use IMAP email accounts with a TLS connection (in case this has something to do with it?).

When I click on a mail it gets marked as "read" in the main view (where the email subject lines are listed). However, in the tree view (wh ere all the folders and accounts are listed), it still shows 1 unread mail. Now, if I switch to another account (or another folder) and then switch back to the original folder, the mail sometimes is again marked as unread (although it was read and marked as read before) in the "subject view window". This is really strange.
After a certain amount of time (varies!), it gets marked as read in the tree-view, too. But this is nowhere close to the time it was actually read.

Will these two things be fixed soon? Or is there something I forgot to configure to make these two annoying issues go away?

Hi,

I can't say anything about your question A because I don't use this feature, but for B I can tell you that you will have to wait just like everyone else for a fix... I have opened a ticket about 2 years ago, the bug was confirmed but nothing has been done so far :) Sometimes I don't understand the Ritlabs team, they create and offer us new features regularly but they don't like fixing some odd behavior... I suggest you open a ticket yourself, maybe they will remember that they have to work on this bug :) Good luck with the support !  (you're gonna need it)

In the meantime, the only workaround I know of is to use the combination of CTRL + R on folders that still show messages as unread....

Did you try to create a filter (condition: any message) to play a sound on new messages?
Place it on the top of the sorting office and select continue processing with other filters at the options tab.

I don't know about problem B, I only experience that when the connection is bad. The speed of the update might be related to the quality of your connection and the size of your folders. (I tend to keep my high traffic folders as small as possible)

Hi guys,

@Roelof: The filter is a nice work-around that works for playing a sound when a message is incoming. However, it still should be just a basic feature to be toggled on/off in account properties IMO. Many people will just try out the Bat and don't take the time to post on the forums, if they see basic features missing. Also, why are POP3 and IMAP handled differently? Doesn't make much sense IMO. Anyway, thanks for the tip.

The unsynced folder view (problem B) remains. And this is a really strange and confusing behaviour for an email client that is in development for such a long time. It's also not related to my connection (I'm on a high-speed, "always on" connection). Neither is it related to the folders being very big, as it affects all folders of all accounts (I run 5 accounts on my email client).

No, I don't have to wait. I'm testing out the Bat (i.e. I'm still on the trial version). I can just uninstall it and install Thunderbird or whatever. It's a shame if bugs aren't looked into, if they were read and confirmed 2 years ago. Doesn't give much hope... :(

I am also struggling with the same (B) issue.  I'm a long time user with POP3, but when I switched to IMAP about 10 months ago, I started having similar problems.  I switched to Thunderbird for awhile but there was a long standing issue with that also, so I returned.

But now I'm having new problems with The Bat! hanging and doing other odd things that I hadn't seen a few versions ago.  I'm trying to decide whether to return to the other TB or look for something totally different.

I'm not sure why IMAP seems to cause so much trouble when my phone is able to handle it so much better.  (K-@ Mail - highly recommended).
