Screen Shots of Version 4

There seem to be some Alpha versions of version 4 around.  I cannot risk installing non final versions as I use my email hourly for business.  Does anyone know where I can see some screeen shots..?  I would be very interested in the new editor..

http://www.batboard.net/index.php?topic=8457.0 in this thread of the unofficial German forum a couple of screenshots are seen. Nothing all to specific though. I hope this is not against the forum rules here.

Thank you Dominik.  There is really very little to see..  Does anyone have the program running..?  Could they post some screen shots?  I use Faststone Viewer to make screen shots if anyone is wondering how to make them.

Thanks  Thomas

Neat.  Does this mean there really will be a version 4?

Thanks, Maxim.  That e-mail address isn't working for me, though.

Hang on, you mean TB 4.0 was announced on 09/06/2007, with the headline "final preparations for 4.0", then again on 10/02/2007, and yet it's now January and it's still in ALPHA testing?!

I've been hanging on for so long now, I think I'm just going to buy Becky and be done with it.

delays in releasing new versions is something so common in the software industry that you should be surprised only in the vary rare cases when something is released on the announced date or earlier.
If I correctly remember what has been posted in recent threads about upgrade policy, if you buy 3.x now you can later upgrade to 4.x for free. So if you like theBat buy it now. BTW I tested the 4 alpha and it doesn't have any significant new features that justify a new major version number(at least from my point of view)

If there are significant new features then why the delay?

I was only really waiting for improved Japanese support and image display in HTML mails (currently you can't click the link in eBay mails to respond). I almost switched to Thunderbird, but it doesn't support default templates which is a bit of a joke for a 2.x program.

The image display in HTML mails has been rather improved in v4, for the rest, just wait and see.

I HAD switched to Thunderbird during the 0.8beta phase and missed the great template stuff TB! brings, so I switched back again.
You *could* make use of the QuickNote extension for Thunderbird, though. That extension is slowly getting massive and usefull as far as I could see on browsing their site.
But then Thunderbird is still too large for me both program wise and the size of the memory footprint. I also don't like that you need all kinds of extensions for esential stuff (like deleting attachments from messages).

Hi,
Does TB 4 solve the Chinese problem? It's confused me so long time.
Once perfect in Chinese, I will purchase it without any hesitation.

Bigg one, do You really think, that

downloading images to HTML
new images viewer
new plaintext editor and viewer
new feature for monitoring history of communication
completely reworked tabs and folder pane
new searching in viewer
decoding Microsoft's MS-TNEF format

and others, these are not significant changes?

Mika, can You describe what is chinese problem?

Hi Marek,
When I reply or forward email to someone, if the mail header include the space, then some characters can not be showed correctly, even header is English.
Here we have common realize, TB doesn't support Chinese very well, at least I feel in mail header, it is true.
I just heard, TB4 supports utf-8, will it be more better?
Thanks.

Since TB is open source, I was very tempted to download it and have a play. The problem is a lack of good docs on how to get started compiling it, and the fact that it uses so many different technologies.

On the other hand, it does have an excellent HTML rendering engine. You can add custom CSS to it as well, which means you can default HTML mail to use white text on a black background but allow complex HTML mail to override the settings (e.g. eBay mails that use tables).

Other things about it suck a lot though, like the way mail is stored.

That is why I'm holding out for TB4. Becky is almost perfect, and being Japanese it obviously has excellent Japanese support, but it uses IE for HTML rendering. If it could just use Firefox instead...

Is it known yet if upgrade to v4, from 3.xx, will require uninstall/install .. or, will there be an "update" capability from 3 to 4?

Version 4 will solve the Chinese problem, since it will have a new, Unicode-based text editor and viewer.

AFAICT from the alpha reports you can just install over the old version.

Thank you, Dominik.

that's great! :D
