What an incredibly fu***d up piece of software, Mindboggling

So ... the "new and improved" The Bat! version 5 arrives and guess what?  It's a sorry excuse.  For the record I'm using Windows 7 and the rest of my laptop runs fine.

1.  What's better:  html downloads definitely better than version 4 but .........still WAY inferior to the rapidity at which downloads take place on other packges including the FREE Eudora OSE

2.  Hangs up / freezes often - have to control-alt-delete - NEW in Version 5

3.  Email headers disappear and reappear - I'm not joking.  Randomly and completely unpredictably, when you click on an email header to open (say, in the Inbox) the email opens, displays, then AUTOMATICALLY the next email in line (can't be sure whether the one immediately above or below) opens up and the one you opened closes.  Then, when you go to Inbox, that email's header has also VANISHED.  I then click on some other mailbox (lets say Outbox) and then back to Inbox and voila! - that header is back.  NEW in Version 5.       WTF ???????

3.  Previously reported FETCH errors continue - see http://www.ritlabs.com/en/forum/index.php?PAGE_NAME=message&FID=4&TID=9828&MID=32731#message32731

4.  I'm getting all sorts of NEW and WEIRD errors like ....

"access violation at address XX##!!! in module thebat.exe.  Write of address 000038"
http://img580.imageshack.us/i/baterror2.jpg/

"DeallocateHWnd from a non GUI thread"
http://img52.imageshack.us/i/baterror1.jpg/

Once again, WTF ??????????!!!!!

I know this is not what TB (and it's supporters) want to hear but the above problems (and problems others have described on this forum) suggests a grossly premature release and a failure of addressing some fundamental problems in this program.

I wonder what others think?

I can tell you're more than a little infuriated by the release, and I can understand why as well. My solution was to go back to using v4. That's the best advice I can give.

And I think you're right. This release shouldn't have been let out of the box. Definitely not ready for prime time.

same type of problem like in no 4 for me.  :( Also some times it just hanged.

I think v5 is too early released.

mail cannot be saved to outbox!

The Bat! v 4.2.44.2 is the version I am running, and it works for me without any problems. I haven't got time for bug reporting and I don't have to with this build.

If you are having problems with v4.2.xx as well it may be a W7 thing (I wouldn't know) because I'm running XP Pro SP3 and v4.2.x is very stable for me, as I said.

Fahim, I understand you, these are really strange problems, but nor freezing, nor particular AV or "DeallocateHWnd from a non GUI thread" errors were ever reported during more than year and half of development, please send me thebat_exceptions.log to [email protected], developers needs whole data to find and reproduce this.

Version 5.0 has most structural changes in core than any other previous release because IMAP, Unicode, API etc, and alas this produced more issues, which were not revealed in longest alpha and betatesting - there were more than 150 builds in this development.

For now, new bugfix release is on the way, there are more than 35 bugfixes and others are in progress.

Thank you for the update Marek.  Yes it is frustrating but these problems are real and mostly new with version 5.  I've been using TB for over 2 years.  It was a painful migration from the "old" Eudora which I had been using for 15 years and I cannot tell you how much I miss Eudora.  I really don't want to migrate back because of the ordeal it will be.

Glad to know that bug fixes are on the way .... 35+ fixes a few weeks after a release tells you that this was clearly a premature release that should NOT have happened.  IT doesn't matter how many "builds" took place, as someone said on this thread, it wasn't ready for prime time.

What data would you like me to send you ?

Fahim, there were not fixed 35+ showstoppers, many of them are minor or specific. You can check similar apps like Total Commander, versions 7 or 7.5 were developed long time because structural changes and there were at least 50 bugfixes in postreleases, because there was not possible to reveal them in team of betatesters regardless how much time You have.

Send file thebat_exceptions.log please

Ouch, my wife just installed this on her Windows 7 PC, can she replace it with an earlier version if she finds problems?
Thanks
Doug

Marek where do I find this batexceptions log file ?

If you're running Windows 7, you can find it in the following directory:-

C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\The Bat! Pwd\thebat_Exceptions.log

Good Grief !

The saga continues.  Upgraded to 5.0.12 in the hope that some of these "bug fixes" would improve things and PERHAPS Ritlabs could crawl out of this quagmire of incompetence but hell no!  This is the mother of all screw ups!

In addition to the above described errors which PERSIST, I am now seeing "new and improved" errors.  See below.

What an incredible shame.

Here's an interesting error

And here's the mother-of-all errors - clicked on an email and the program choked and barfed out an infinite number of error windows in an endless loop - had to control-alt-delete my way out of Thebat for this one.  See for yourself (email folders blanked out for privacy).

A few more (why leave these ones out)!

Hello all,

And we have paid for this, that's the funny part :)

I know nothing is perfect in this world, but I guess ritlabs is too ambitious, even with latest V4 build, which is said to be stable, I encounter every once in a while some strange behaviors, I can even say bugs, things that weren't addressed ! I tried V5, naively thinking that with this new core, things would get better, but it was a joke, i still get the same old bugs (like in your screenshots fahim). I know that the first things that comes to mind is that I'm doing something wrong, I missed something in the setup, etc. in other words I'm a total noob :) I'm not going to try to convince anyone that I'm a "god" in the computer field, all I can tell you is that I quite understand what I'm doing.

Anyways, the goal of my message is not to destroy the image of ritlabs, since I love their products, especially TheBat! for me it's the best email client ever ! But What I would have done if I was in command of ritlabs, is to fix all the bugs before trying to make new versions and introducing even more bugs (and leaving the old ones still present). Come on ritlabs, all these people complaining they are not all dumb or stupid, you got to give us some credits sometimes, If you can't reproduce a bug it doesn't mean that it doesn't exist ! And keep in mind, that not everybody takes the time to write in this forum or opens a ticket when a problem occurs (it means that there are more frustrated people than you might think). There are lots of issues, some small non blocking I agree, but there are some very annoying.

It has been almost two years I'm looking for an alternate email client, with this much capabilities, but found nothing, because I've gotta tell that I'm tired of the bat and its administrative management (many tickets are still opened and not addressed, that's not serious people ! we're not using a Freeware !!!) . As soon as I can get rid of it, I will. I'm stuck for now, because nothing can do better than the bat !

Good luck.

Yeah....i think so. The Bat v5 has so many bugs. But the problem is i can't switch to other email clients. Still now The BAT is the best. So hope that they will solve those bugs as soon as possible.

Ray

I agree, version 4 had bugs (the famous "FETCH" error to name one, html email not downloading was another).  You said it right - most of us are  experienced e-mail users (sure, not software programmers) and are quite savvy around email software so we are not the one's screwing up.  Being "stuck" with a program is a bad thing.

If Ritlabs had any spine there would be at least an acknowledgment of problems by their administration on this forum

This is a USER forum and is seldom monitored by developers. Fill out a support request on the web page if you need help

Why no join the beta list and help create and confirm the bug reports?

Well said, Rick.

Would like to state that I've personally benefited from it - not that personal gain was the motive for beta-testing (but, just to be of help to others.)

Personal gain is great! If you are in there helping, you are the first one to get the fixes. 8)

Good suggestion to join a beta testing group.  I'm sure there are rewards.  However, I signed up (and paid) to be a software user not a beta tester.

Mail ticker is still out of order in beta 5.012.2

Unfortunately yes...

Downgraded to version 4 ...... less errors now.  No further updates on TB it seems
